TEAR Group April Action

Hi friends,
We have a great opportunity for you to be part of over the next couple of months!
In the lead up to this year’s Federal Budget, we want to encourage you to show your support for Australian Aid by gathering a group to meet with your local MP during April.
This is TEAR’s key aid advocacy action in 2018 and we are working together with our friends from Campaign for Australian Aid to show every Member of Parliament that Australians care deeply about Australian Aid.
The timing is critical. As the next Federal Budget is negotiated, MPs are paying close attention to their constituents’ cares and concerns. This window for influence is even more important as parties are developing the policy platforms they will take to the next federal election. So, it’s the ideal time to speak up for Australian Aid and show our MPs what we really value: justice, compassion and a world where everyone has a chance to live out their God-given potential.
We will provide you with a step-by-step action guide plus messaging and policy material to help you set up your meeting and speak confidently about the issues. You’ll also have the opportunity to join our training event, How to have better conversations about poverty and aid.
Register your interest - https://confirmsubscription.com/h/r/932AF44162336634 and we’ll email you details on how to take part.
If you want to know more or have any questions, please get in touch at [email protected].

Carpe Diem
Genesis 44; Hebrews 8–9; Ecclesiastes 11:1–4
The Latin phrase Carpe Diem, means “seize the day.” Taking risks to make your life extraordinary is biblical, if done according to God’s plan and principles. The idea behind this comes from Ecclesiastes: “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days” (Eccl 11:1).
Bread acts as the symbol for substance in the ancient world; the author of Ecclesiastes is suggesting that we should follow God’s plan, even at the possible cost of our livelihood. He then suggests that what we give to God, He will return. This is opposite from a self-protection mentality. The “waters” in the proverb represent chaos, suggesting that in letting go of even the most chaotic circumstances, we learn about God’s ability to give what we need.
This is further illustrated when the author says, “Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth.… He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap” (Eccl 11:2, 4). In other words, there is no real way to calculate the return on investment. Things can always go bad. But with God, that’s not the case. He honors the work of those who diligently follow Him and give of themselves.
In the eyes of the world, not everything will work out perfectly for those who willingly give to God. But it will work out in the spiritual long haul. So, when God calls us to something, the answer is Carpe Diem. And the question we should be asking Him is, “What can I do for you and your kingdom?”
What risks are you taking for God right now? Have you asked Him what risks He would like you to take?

Restricting advocacy by charities sends a deeply troubling message – that our government is seeking to avoid accountability. Their actions would have a chilling effect on our democracy.

Hands off our charities! The federal government is planning to ban charities from speaking up for Australians on issues they care about. If successful, the vital work of health, aid and development, environmental and medical research charities will be undermined and the voice of many Australians sil...

Breaking News! Cotton On publishes supplier list
Cotton On Group (owner of Cotton On, Cotton On Body, Cotton On Kids, Factorie, Supre and Rubi) has commenced their disclosure journey by publishing a partial list of their suppliers. It’s another big step in transparency and excitingly, it was coupled with a commitment from the group to have 100% of their suppliers, from farms to factories, traced and disclosed by 2018. These steps demonstrate a willingness to be accountable to consumers, workers and the public – while at the same time making a strong statement about the belief the company has in their labour rights management systems.
Transparency is a powerful driver to bring an end worker exploitation in the global supply chain. We’ll be keeping you updated as companies continue to take important measures, like this one, to uphold the rights of workers!
