https://dkgcreative.com.au/advice-when-you-are-about-to-order-a-website-under-1000/
DKG have been working with small local businesses since 1997 and we would like to think that we have the local business owner at heart whenever we deal with them or offer advice. We know exactly what hurts the local business owner and when it comes to shortfalls keeping a business website up-to-date we are fully aware.

What we consistently see that scares the hell out of us is that local business owners seem quite happy to save money on a new website and they engage a computer company or a designer or a print company to build their new website. Firstly, DKG is all for saving money too and we know price is an important factor in any decision making these days, but what I don't get is how a local business owner thinks a computer IT company, designer or printshop are going to build them a website that works. If ever there is a time for a business website to be required to function at the top of its game it is NOW. I want all local business websites functioning as they should be and bringing in targeted leads on a regular basis, and not to be vulnerable to hacking, and they should be ranking well in local searches for their products and searches, so I only ask you all if you are considering a new business website regardless of who you think you might be engaging to build it to simply do some due diligence and ask them the following questions ...

What keywords do you think should be my main keywords?
How do you know these are my main keywords?
I don't want to hear that this new website will be search engine friendly (everyone says this), tell me will I be ranked highly for my main keywords, and how long will it take?
What are you doing to ensure my business websites gets indexed in Google?
Will you be regularly checking with Google to ensure my business website is tracking well?
How do you check with Google to see the status of my business website and please don't just say Google Analytics?
Will you be using AMP technology on my new business website?
What sort of support do you offer after website handover and for how long?
Will my business website be truly responsive and be able to be viewed in ANY device?
How fast will my web pages load on desktop and mobile?

Now as you can see from those questions they are not what your average computer it, graphic designer or printshop person would know a lot about but in fact these questions should be asked and able to be answered off the cuff as this is just every day knowledge to a web developer who spends every spare minute he or she has keeping up with Google updates, latest technologies, vulnerability news, ecommerce and marketing products so we can ensure that our clients get what they pay for and know they will get a true return on their investment.

To all those computer IT people, graphic designers and printshop people I apologise if I offend, you may actually know all of the above, and I am sure some do. My message today is for local business owners to value their next business website and do some due diligence so you will end up with a great website, after all, let's be honest, you as a local business owner is going to be expecting this new website to churn out fresh new leads on a daily basis and perform many marketing tasks as well regardless of the few pennies you paid for it.

Give the web developer a go!

Search engines are now the most popular means of finding information, and while the market is dominated by Google, there are other relevant players in the industry. Search engines rank websites according to different algorithms and have different features that separate them from one another. They can, therefore, be utilised in different ways to market themselves to the general public and to their target demographic.

Directories, which essentially categorise and link to different kinds of websites, are also very important as far as helping a business generate an online presence.

Now let's look at Australia’s leading search engines and directories.
Top 3 Search Engines Used by Australians

Google

Sending upwards of 90% of all traffic around the internet, Google ranks as the number one search engine by a significant margin and ultimately dominates the search industry. Like Facebook, the company originally started as a University Project before growing into one of the most recognisable global brand names (Google is now even considered a verb by most modern dictionaries).

Pre-Google, early search engines such as AltaVista and others essentially ranked pages according to the number of times a keyword appeared in a particular page. PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Stanford University theorised that it would be more helpful for users if pages were ranked according to the authority of the webpage.

Early search engines could easily be duped into highly ranking websites whose content was keyword-stuffed and not all that valuable to the user at all.

Google’s PageRank technology introduced the idea that the quality or relevance of a website could be determined by the number of pages that link to it and the importance of those pages. Backlinks still play a fundamental part of Google search algorithm, which is periodically being adjusted to improve the user experience.

Since its conception in 1997, Google has launched a number of other products closely associated with search. Among these are Google Adwords, Google Translate, Google Maps, Google Plus and Google Local.
It currently accounts for roughly 67% of all searches online.
Bing

Microsoft’s search engine Bing was officially launched in 2009, though it previously existed under other names. Since branding itself under the new name, the search engine has continued to see its market share grow, which sits at 18.1% at last count.

Boasting a higher ‘success rate’ than Google (which essentially means more users actually click a result after searching), Bing also powers Yahoo’s search. This means that 27.1% of all searches are powered by Bing. In actual fact, Yahoo also powers Bing’s paid search platform, which means that paid advertisers can manage their campaigns on both search engines more conveniently and inexpensively. This alliance has helped Bing grow significantly.

Bing has also been integrated with Apple’s search results, which is hugely significant considering that Google has been dropped as a result. Bing’s web search is the default for iOS 7 and higher operating systems.

While Bing’s increase in the market share has mainly come at the expense of Yahoo, we’ll be watching closely to see if they can make an impact on Google’s share, which has remained relatively stable for a number of years.
Yahoo

Founded in 1994, Yahoo has previously been considered a leader in terms of market share in the web search world. While it still accounts for roughly 11% of total searches, its relevance has been dwindling away in recent years and it has lost a lot of ground on Google and Bing.

Originally, Yahoo did not crawl or index webpages but would rather send queries through Inktomi and Google, presenting search results with Yahoo branding but relying on other providers. In 2004, Yahoo created its own original web-crawler technology, which it named Yahoo Slurp and sold onto to other smaller web search sites.

For the past 4 or so years, Yahoo’s search has been powered by Bing. Despite this alliance, Bing seems to be increasing its share of searches at the expense of Yahoo.
Top 10 Australian Directories

There is some debate in regards to the effectiveness of utilising directories as a means of improving ranks for a website, but there is no question that they still form an important part of any online marketing strategy.

Over the years, search engine algorithms have increasingly placed less emphasis on low-quality backlinks, which may describe listings in many directories. Further, the extent to which they are used has decreased somewhat, as search engines have become much more user-friendly and deliver better results.

The average consumer is arguably more likely to search for a service in Google rather than a directory. This is relevant because the less traffic a directory receives, the less relevant it is from an SEO perspective. However, there are certain niche directories that can be very valuable to users who, for instance, aren’t entirely sure of what they need to type into a search engine to get the desired result.

1. Yelp Australia is one of the biggest directories in the country, with more than 1 million visitors per month. Part of Yelp’s popularity is its review feature, which can be very helpful to potential consumers. With the Australian version launched in 2011, it can be used to search for and information about everything from restaurants and nightclubs to doctors.

2. TrueLocal, which has similar features to Yelp, is also used by many Australians and receives 8.6 million searches on a monthly basis. It enables users to search for businesses in their area and boasts that it is ‘Australia’s fastest growing business directory’. Owned be Telstra, businesses can also advertise on the website for more exposure.

3. Yellow Pages’ online presence is also worth mentioning. Despite the fact that usage figures for both their print and web media have been falling away, Yellow Pages still comes in as the 105th most visited website in Australia. Businesses are able to submit information on the website for free and users can see reviews on Yelp.

Other Popular Australian directories include:

4. StartLocal

5. Come on Aussie

6. Hot Frog

7. AussieWeb

8. Womo

9. Super Pages

10. Local.com.au

If you are a small business just trying to get a listing in local search results you won't hurt your cause by listing your business details into the above mentioned Top 10 Australian Directories, BUT be very sure you have your NAP (name, address, and phone number) exactly the same in all your listings. When I say exactly the same I am referring to upper and lower case, spacings and abbreviations, it is super important your NAP is consistent in ALL online directories (otherwise known as citation sites).

As we speak Google is in the midst of rolling out their Mobile-First Update.
As always on the net their are many individual interpretations of what the update is about and how it will effect you.
I checked out Google Webmaster's explanation and following excerpt is courtesy of https://developers.google.com/search/mobile-sites/mobile-first-indexing

"Best practices for mobile-first indexing

Mobile-first indexing means Google will predominantly use the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index primarily used the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query. Since the majority of users now access Google via a mobile device, the index will primarily use the mobile version of a page's content going forward. We aren't creating a separate mobile-first index. We continue to use only one index.

With mobile-first indexing, Googlebot primarily crawls and indexes pages with the smartphone agent. We will continue to show the URL that is the most appropriate to users (whether it's a desktop or mobile URL) in Search results.

As we said, we transition sites slowly to ensure a good experience for site owners and users. We evaluate each site individually on its readiness for mobile-first indexing based on the best practices and transition the site when the site is ready.
"

Another interesting excerpt from Google courtesy of https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2018/03/rolling-out-mobile-first-indexing.html

"To recap:

Mobile-indexing is rolling out more broadly. Being indexed this way has no ranking advantage and operates independently from our mobile-friendly assessment.
Having mobile-friendly content is still helpful for those looking at ways to perform better in mobile search results.
Having fast-loading content is still helpful for those looking at ways to perform better for mobile and desktop users.
As always, ranking uses many factors. We may show content to users that’s not mobile-friendly or that is slow loading if our many other signals determine it is the most relevant content to show.

We’ll continue to monitor and evaluate this change carefully.
"

My take on all of this is ...

While Google is down-playing any thoughts that mobile-first indexing will not affect organic rankings, in time we will find that mobile performance will totally guide organic ranking results so I strongly suggest to all local business website owners to get your house in order now. By following my advice you could avoid a sharp drop in rankings when mobile does control ranking factors.

It is as simple as this, don't worry what Google is doing or might affect, it just makes sense that with the bulk of website viewers using mobile devices these days that we should ensure we are delivering the best mobile experience we can to keep our business thriving and derail any chance of ranking or sales dipping on us and affecting our sales.

If you would like a full complimentary web audit that covers both desktop and mobile metrics then please go to our contact page and request an audit via our online form. You will not only get back an unbiased audit, but a quote to fix whatever problems you might have and we will even tell you what you need to do if perhaps your budget is tight and you want to do it yourself.

https://dkgcreative.com.au/page-load-speed/
While most local business owners are just trying to get on with doing business and trying to get ahead Google continue to roll out updates that determine where sites rank in organic search. Google have been taking interest in page load speed for a while now and depending who you are listening too will vary how much influence on your organic search results page load speed will affect you.

From what I can make out of all this is that the slowest loading websites will lose any organic ranking they had, but at this stage it's not going to play a big part in determining your rankings. However, common sense will tell you that if your web pages are taking a while to load then the odds are very high that your potential web visitor is going to bail out anyway and probably end up at your opposition's website. So with that being said you should address any concerns of slow loading pages right now before it gets out of hand. Drop us a note by clicking on this link if you have concerns and want DKG to assess what is required and sort it out for you. We will assess it and give you a quote for us to fix it for you, we will even tell you how to go about improving speed yourself if the budget is a bit tight. Either way it is in your best interest to talk to us about it.

Want to check what Google thinks about your page load speed?
Go here and enter your website to get a rating.
What did you score? Feedback I have been getting on this suggests your desktop should be 75 or above, and your mobile should be no less than 65, but obviously the higher the score the better.
