Amazing bit of Goldfields history — back in the late 1800s, the Victorian Government set up state-run gold batteries to help miners crush their ore when private options weren’t around. At their peak there were more than 30 of them running across the state, but now just six remain standing as relics of that era. 🔋

What a legend – 11 years of service with the Maldon CERT and still giving her time to groups like the Museum and Bowling Club. Annette Gilham being named a finalist is the kind of recognition that makes the whole town proud! 🌟

Big applause for Maldon’s own Annette Gillham, who’s been honoured as a finalist in the Victorian Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards 👏 With more than 11 years as part of the Maldon Community Emergency Response Team, Annette’s dedication shines through both in emergencies and in her work with local groups like the Maldon Museum and Bowling Club. A well-deserved recognition for someone who puts service to community at the heart of everything she does 🌟 Good on you, Annette!

After 160 years of weather and wear, Maldon’s iconic Beehive Chimney is set to be restored! 🐝

There’s been a buzz around town about the future of Maldon’s iconic Beehive Chimney 🐝—and rightly so. After 160 years of weather and wear (plus some not-so-helpful 1990s repairs), Parks Victoria says it's time for careful restoration. Locals met on site last week to hear what’s planned, including using salvaged bricks and traditional lime mortar to make it safe without losing its historic charm. Pick up this week's paper for the FAQ.

With myocarditis and other heart diseases on the rise since 2021, Maldon General Cemetery has been equipped with a defibrillator! 🫀

Maldon General Cemetery is now equipped with a defibrillator, thanks to funding from Maldon & District Community Bank and support from local business Rhythm First Aid. Cemetery staff have received training on the device, along with general first aid, to help improve safety for visitors. Chair Christine Fitzgerald thanked both organisations for their continued support, saying the upgrades wouldn’t be possible without them.

They did it! 🙌🏻

After four and a half years of setbacks, hurdles and bureaucratic hair-pulling, Porcupine Village in Maldon has finally scored its official planning permit.

The dream is alive, folks – and this time it’s not just talk.

Doug and Deb Baird, the passionate (and clearly persistent) owners of the much-loved village, couldn’t hold back their excitement.

“We’ve always said we’d shout it from the rafters when we finally got our permit – and here we are!” they wrote in their announcement.

The planning permit – PA2403444 if you’re into the red tape details – was officially issued last Friday by the Minister for Planning.

That means the full-blown revival of Porcupine Village is no longer just a dream scribbled on a café napkin. It's happening.

Now, before you go dusting off your boots and getting your wedding reception or bush do booked in, there's still a bit of work to do.

The permit came with more than 90 conditions – yep, you read that right – and some of them are apparently a bit of a pain in the backside.

But the Bairds aren’t fazed. After the hell they've already slogged through, what’s a few more hoops?

Their goal? A fully reawakened village, with top-notch accommodation, cracking dining options, and a function space that’ll knock the socks off anything else in the region.

“Thanks to everyone who stood by us,” the Bairds expressed. “Your support got us through the rough patches.”

Doug and Deb say there are still a few months of grunt work ahead, but the focus has officially shifted from if to when.

And by the sounds of it, when those gates swing open, it’s going to be bloody magic.

So here’s to the underdogs who stuck it out. Maldon’s about to get a whole lot livelier – and it’s about time!

It all kicked off just after 4pm on Monday arvo – a shed out on Maldon-Newstead Road went up in flames, fast and furious.

By the time CFA crews rocked up, the whole thing was belting out thick smoke and lighting up the sky.

Fireys scrambled hard to stop it spreading to the nearby house, and somehow – with no mains water and gear scattered everywhere – they pulled it off.

Turns out the fire likely started with a lithium-ion battery pack sitting in the shed. One dodgy little device, and bang – gone. No warning. No chance.

Crews from Maldon, Newstead, and across the region set up a relay from a nearby dam, pumping thousands of litres just to stay in the fight. It took 40 minutes to beat it back.

Now the CFA’s sending a clear message – these lithium-ion batteries aren’t just a quiet fire risk, they’re bloody dangerous if you’re not careful.

Charge 'em with the right gear. Don’t buy knock-offs. And for the love of your home, get interconnected smoke alarms where you charge your stuff.

One slip, and you’re watching your life burn down. Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident.
