Did you know that Langley Primary School – just east of Elphinstone, Taradale and Malmsbury – has been running a practical sustainability program through its weekly kitchen garden classes? 🌱
The school focuses on growing seasonal and local food, composting, and reusing garden materials.
It operates three composting systems on rotation and uses wicking garden beds to grow a mix of seasonal produce and bush tucker, with recent harvests including basil and late-season tomatoes.
Each week, students work on a different garden activity such as propagating, seed saving or creating habitat for local fairy wrens.
Produce grown in the garden is used in a weekly cooking class, linking food production with preparation and sharing.
Back in March, students attended the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, where they also exhibited a scarecrow made entirely from upcycled materials.
The program aims to build basic gardening skills and an understanding of seasonal change, waste reduction and food production as part of regular school activities.
