The Nationals rolled through Maryborough during the week, with Eastern Victoria MP Melina Bath talking with locals about the issues regional Victorians are dealing with.
Melina said she was “great to be door knocking, meeting locals and understanding the issues facing regional Victorians,” and trying to understand how the Allan Government’s flawed policies are impacting public access, rights, and services.
She pointed to familiar frustrations – poor roads, weak health services, constant taxes and a “woeful” level of infrastructure spending – and said many locals feel Labor has taken the region for granted, with the VicRoads saga proving the point.
But despite the visit, the Coalition’s polling remains extremely low, with One Nation now almost level – an extraordinary jump for a minor party and a clear sign of how fed up voters in Maryborough and across the Ripon electorate are with the two-party model.
Increasingly, many locals view Labor and the Liberal-Nationals as barely distinguishable, especially on key regional issues where promises are loud but follow-through is thin.
Several community members also noted the absence of Nationals Member for Mallee, Anne Webster, who did not attend despite Maryborough being part of her electorate – a detail that didn’t go unnoticed.
For many in the region, the message is the same: the Coalition often talks tough about Labor’s policies, but once in government they rarely roll back those same decisions.
