14/06/2026

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a time to raise awareness of the six recognised forms of elder abuse: psychological, physical, neglect, social, sexual and financial abuse.

Research shows that 1 in 6 older people experience abuse, and around 70% of harm is caused by a family member.

Risk factors can include family conflict, social isolation or loneliness, ageism, impaired capacity, grief and loss, and dependence on others.

Protective actions include staying socially connected, accessing support or aged care services, knowing your rights, and documenting personal wishes.

Advocare encourages older Western Australians, families and communities to learn the signs, speak up, and help prevent elder abuse. Support is available through the WA Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 724 679 (Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm) or online at advocare.org.au.
