Self confessed music nerd, Sophie Joy has been taking over stereos at every opportunity for most of her life. From being THAT person at a party who has 'just one more song' to play for you, to having actually being paid to choose music once upon a time as a programmer for Triple M Melbourne and Mix FM Perth. Funk, soul, hip hop and jazz influenced beats for the discerning music lover.

Seems like a million years ago when I used to do voice over work. Pretty sure my station IDs are still getting a run on . This pic is 13 years ago in their studios when the b-boy was a wee bubba. Before I had kids I had a show with cuz Sals on Friday nights playing funky jams. Before that, I used to work in commercial radio. I started in the creative and production departments as a writer and later moved into music programming and some panel operation. It all seems so long ago! And looking at this pic really reminds me how long it’s been. That baby in this pic is nearly as tall as me now! Maybe one day I’ll do a show again. 🤷‍♀️

Last week I was feeling a bit blahhhh, so I decided to do something to treat myself. Normally, I’m a massage kind of gal, but my beautiful friend Kez from is offering all these amazing treatments - some of which she’s the only operator on the peninsula - so I thought I’d try something new.

This is me in the super fancy cocoon of the HOCATT Ozone Sauna, which followed my Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEFT) session. I’m not even going to begin to pretend I knew what goodness I was receiving! I can only tell you I felt relaxed and awesome afterwards.

What are you up to on this delightful first weekend of the school holidays? I’ll be spinning some sort of funky, good time grooves at this Sat night from 6pm. It was around this time, 10 years ago that I started DJing live. At the time, I worked behind the bar at and had built a lot of playlists for the venue on iTunes using my own music (in a time before Spotify!). When the resident DJ, Tim, left for overseas, knowing I had decks, Dumpy and Ness (original owners), asked me if I wanted the gig. Yeah I wanted the gig!! I was pretty fu***ng s**t though to begin, let’s be honest. I learnt to mix well in front of a live audience. Every Sat 9pm-1am I played funk and a lot of old school, underground hip hop. My earlier sets were heavily influenced by , and . I loved that residency. I loved God’s. That place and all the people and friendships and messy nights still hold a special place in my heart.

Since then, I’ve swapped lugging the vinyl turntables everywhere for a very convenient (and light!) controller, more disco and funk than hip hop, I wear shoes while playing now and the never ending bevs have been swapped for water.

(I bloody love hip hop and would love the chance to play a full set of it again. Is there a market for it down here? I don’t know.)

Just getting a bit nostalgic over here thinking about how far I’ve come since that first gig where I literally was shaking trying to get the needle on the record.

Super grateful for the original opportunity which has led to 10 years of funk across the peninsula. From weddings to kid’s discos, festival stages and the chance to play some of the best venues and meet some of the peninsula’s finest hospo crew, I am always so grateful to be trusted with an audience to create the vibe.

Hailing from the Mornington Peninsula (VIC), DJ Sophie Joy is stoked to be bringing her unique sound to your ears!

A lover of big beats and funky bass, she’s got a mixed bag of delights for you. Funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop inspired beats and breaks, she’s quite fond of a good edit and mash up, too. Glitch hop, disco, house, reggae, dub… Her sets can head in just about any direction!

Weaving together all her favourite things - horn stabs, jazz licks, funky beats and soulful grooves, her infectious personality and positive disposition translates flawlessly into her DJ sets.

Having sold her soul for a few years working as a music programmer for commercial radio, she’s super pumped to have found her spirit home behind the turntables - spinning tunes that make her happy, the crowd happy, and keep the good vibes flowing, effortlessly.
