Some details on this unfortunate occurrence https://www.facebook.com/share/p/183ZYKKgWx/

RAAF EA-18G Growler A46-311, assigned to No. 6 Squadron, experienced an uncontained GE F414 engine failure during the latter stages of its take-off roll at Nellis Air Force Base. At approximately 140 knots, the ballistic material failure of the right-hand engine caused the near-simultaneous failure of the left engine, triggering a cascading series of malfunctions and a fierce fuel and airframe fire.

One of the aircraft's engines broke into three major pieces — one segment pierced through the airframe, another went through the second engine, and a third destroyed the right-hand tail section. The two crew members stayed with the aircraft until it came to rest off the side of Nellis' eastern runway, then climbed clear of the flames without injury — but the aircraft was damaged beyond any economical repair. Australia's request for compensation was rejected in the earliest stages of negotiation.

Years later, the replacement aircraft — serial A46-313 — arrived at Nellis to join the 6 Squadron contingent, restoring the fleet to its original twelve jets. Australia's Growler fleet is now set for major upgrades including the AN/ALQ-249 Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band, new anti-radiation missiles, and advanced sensor systems — ensuring this unique capability, the only airborne electronic attack force outside the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, remains operationally competitive.
