We are delighted to announce that the NSW Health Department have approved crematoriums to offer shrouded cremation to the NSW community.

Shrouded cremation is the practice of returning a body to the elements by way of fire cremation but without the need for a coffin. It is a beautiful, sustainable and respectful practice and one Natural Grace is proud to have pionereed in Victoria and offered our community for over a decade.

This is wonderful news for all those seeking to minimise their environmental impact but also for those for whom a coffin serves no meaningful purpose.

Our niece, Georgia, recently became our first work experience student! It was just a short placement, but we loved sharing our business with her. Georgia helped us with various tasks, and as a project she created this tile. We think it’s brilliant, and we so agree that young people have an important role to play in sharing the message that there are beautiful, Earth-friendly choices even at end of life.

This is a step in the right direction, we need to be able to have the option to have the whole family buried together! Well done NSW hopefully the other states won’t be far behind.

PASSED! A new law has been created to ensure we can be buried alongside our deceased companion animals. I know many people who keep the ashes of their beloved companion animals - and hope to be buried together some day - now in NSW you can!

My Animal Justice Party colleague Georgie Purcell - Animal Justice Party MP brought this issue to our attention when she spoke about it in the Victorian Parliament. She told the story of an elderly man who sought to bury his beloved deceased dog next to his wife’s grave. The couple had their dog for 16 years together. They were never able to have children, and this dog was the only family this man had. All he wanted to do was bury their fur child alongside his wife - but he was not legally allowed to.

In both VIC and NSW the legislation was silent on the issue- and many cemeteries were saying that it couldn't be done.

Today we clarified the law (and no, this doesn't mean people can kill their animals to be buried with them) to ensure deceased animals can be buried with human remains because families come in all shapes, sizes and species. 💖🐕

Last week we had a great visit with acute care nursing students at Monash University, speaking about green burial and holistic deathcare. Our goal was to empower them with knowledge about alternative options to inform their discussions with patients and their families about end-of-life. We had fun shrouding a student (thanks, Kim!) in our freshly tie-dyed bamboo fleece shroud.

Did you know you can have a shrouded cremation anywhere in Victoria? It’s becoming more readily available all over Australia so if your end of life wishes include being cremated you can make it a more environmentally friendly choice by choosing a shrouded cremation.

What is a shrouded cremation?

When a body is placed within a cremator, in most cases it is required to be on a hard, flat base because the body will enter the cremator on rollers. To address this issue, some coffin makers have developed what is called ‘a shroud bearer’ or ‘shroud carriage’. They have been designed with a hard, flat base, handles for manoeuvrability and made of various materials like wood, cardboard, wicker etc.

Shroud bearers and shroud carriages are an affordable option, they can be purchased for only a few hundred dollars. They can be used as a coffin would for transport in a suitable vehicle meaning no additional purchase is necessary.

Aloha! We are in Hawaii! We decided to wrangle our many children on a ten hour flight to have a family reunion with some of our North American relatives. This includes our Grandma, who is also a twin mum!

We will be overseas until 3 April, but we are still open for business during this time. However, please be aware there might be a bit of a delayed response due to the time difference. 🌴🌺🏖️

Yesterday afternoon a bush fire broke out in our local area. Alyssa and her family and our Mum evacuated as the fire burnt out of control, after several hours they contained the blaze and they were able to go home. Unfortunately, a couple of hours later the wind picked up and the fire picked right back up, coming right up to the back of the family property and breaking out on the road in front. Once again the family evacuated and Mum came to Tamsin’s house, Alyssa’s family went to a good friends’ house and we spent the whole night staying up and listening to the scanner and following the vic emergency app. Tamsin’s house is unfortunately quite close to the alert area so they were primed and ready to go too if necessary, but luckily it has stayed contained.

All this has meant that we were unfortunately unable to attend the Ringwood Sustainability Festival, but we were so appreciative of their understanding. Please do get down to Central Ringwood Community Centre to support them today if you are able! They are set up inside due to the wet weather conditions.

Our enormous gratitude to the firefighters, emergency services, and all those who have offered their support.
