Email reporter Erin Constable at [email protected] Lilydale is in the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, which is made up by a mix of urban and rural areas. Its population in June 2007 stands at 145,596. About 70 per cent of the municipality’s population reside in the urban areas, which makes up only 3 per cent of the land. The remainder live in rural areas. The Shire has over 55 suburbs, towns

and rural communities, making it a very diverse municipality. The Shire offices are based in Lilydale. The town, 39 kilometres from Melbourne’s centre, is the outermost of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, before the rural upper Yarra Valley. Lilydale’s features include Lillydale Lake, a recreational area located in the region’s wetlands. Nowadays, the lake is surrounded by new housing estates. The lake is situated within a park, which extends for over 100 hectares. Lillydale Lake itself is 28 hectares in size, and has a 440 metre long dam wall. In the park, there are more than 10 kilometres of shared trails, a community room, a playground, BBQs and a picnic area. Non powered boating is perrmitted on the lake, with a launch ramp also put to good use during the summer months. Running through Lilydale, The Olinda Creek has its source in the Dandenong Ranges. It is a tributary of the Yarra River. About the Lilydale and Yarra Valley Leader
