Belly dance—Raqs Sharqi—originated in Egypt, a graceful art form rooted in ancient rituals and social celebrations. It bloomed into the modern style we know today in Cairo’s early 20th-century venues like Badia Masabni’s Opera Casino, popularised by iconic stars like Samia Gamal.

Growing up, Mumma filled our home with Arabic music and the rhythms of Raqs Sharqi, teaching me that dance is expression, release, and pure joy. Every shimmy I share lights me up from the inside out.

Back in 2019: Madrid → bus to Tarifa → ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar into Tangier (just a one-hour voyage!). We spent 10 colorful, joy-filled days weaving our way from Casablanca to Marrakech, Fez, a Saharan night under stars, the Atlas Mountains, and the dreamy blue labyrinth of Chefchaouen—Morocco’s enchanting “Blue City” nestled in the Rif Mountains.

Every meal, medina, melody, and bargaining moment pulsed with warmth and reminded me how deeply Egyptian and Moroccan cultures echo one another—rich, vibrant, and full of heart.

In Egypt, when we say 'Going to the ahwa,' it’s never just about grabbing a cup of coffee, it’s heading to the heart of our community. An ahwa is a timeless café conversation hub where the click of Tawla dice fills the air and worries get lightened over strong, cardamom-scented ahwa. It’s where friendships are brewed, stories poured, and daily stresses are gently shaken away one roll at a time.
