and Noisegate have been great hosts for their inaugural Sound Summit, organising visits to SynthTemple and Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio for their international guests before they headed home.
Our team really enjoyed meeting the folk from Teenage Engineering, Telepathic Instruments, Moog, Korg, inMusic and others, and introducing them to the SynthTemple collection. Guests gravitated to the Korg PS-3300, Roland System 700, PPG Wave, Sequential Prophet 5, Ultra-Sounds DS-4 and Yamaha CS-80.

Congratulations to CMI Music & Audio and Noisegate on a hugely successful inaugural Sound Summit on 13 Sept. It was great to see so many people from across the industry and wider electronic music community coming together.

Over the past month or so, SynthTemple has had the pleasure of hosting six workshops for students from three Melbourne tertiary institutions — the University of Melbourne, Collarts and SAE University College.
The University of Melbourne brought students from each of its first, second and third-year Interactive Composition programs, Collarts brought first year Music Production groups, and we’ve also welcomed students from SAE.
It’s been fantastic to see the next generation of musicians getting hands on and excited by the depth and complexity of sounds made possible by analogue gear, while making music together in such a collaborative and supportive environment.
Taking a break from creating to experience immersive Dolby Atmos mixes in Studio 2 — including their own tracks in stereo — through our Genelec monitoring system has also proved very popular.
The usual format starts with Tony introducing students to our Synth Pod setup, followed by Steve demonstrating some modular basics on the Roland System 700 and taking them through some highlights of the collection.
Students then break into groups, and the cacophony of synths gradually gives way to a more focused kind of creativity as each laptop is connected to a Synth Pod and they begin recording into their chosen DAW on headphones.
Kudos to Collarts, the University of Melbourne and SAE for giving their students these memorable and inspiring opportunities.
Collarts are also regulars in the studio with final year capstone students having one-on-one sessions with a lecturer in a synth pod.
Excursions were never this much fun in our day!

The cacophony on arrival before the 9 laptops are connected, one to each synth pod, and the 27 students don their headphones to get down to some serious fun exploring, experimenting, jamming and recording on the largest working vintage synthesizer collection in the world. At 27 students and 2 staff, yesterday’s University of Melbourne first year Interactive Composition workshop broke a studio record for the most players at any one time simultaneously working on our collection.

We had a great couple of days in the studio hosting Yuki, Yoshi and Ibon from Korg Japan.
Steve particularly enjoyed nerding out with Yoshi over the electronics inside our vintage synths. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge and dive into some of the technology behind these iconic instruments.
Thanks to Lachlan and Ian from CMI Music & Audio for coordinating Korg’s time at SynthTemple. It was a pleasure having the team with us.

There don’t seem to be any schematics for the Korg PS-3300 but the barely readable PS-3200 schematics cover most of the 3300 circuits. Colour markers help a lot too! If you are interested in the PS-3300 I just posted a reel on Steve’s latest repairs to ours.
