I congratulate all candidates who stepped up to make a difference and wish the newly elected councillors every success as they embark on their four-year journey. Representing the community is a significant responsibility, and I hope it will always be approached with the community’s needs and aspirations at heart.
It has been an honour to serve Darebin for the past 12 years, including as Deputy Mayor and unanimously endorsed Mayor (2022–2023). During this time, I’ve chaired boards and committees and had the privilege of advocating for our vibrant and diverse community.
Darebin has led progressive governance, setting global benchmarks:
Declared the world’s first climate emergency in 2016, sparking a global movement.
Introduced solar panels, energy-efficient facilities, and sustainable building designs like the 6-star NARC facility.
Championed autism-friendly spaces, inclusive playgrounds with giant hanging swing baskets, and sensory gardens, now adopted nationally.
Advocated for medicinal cannabis cultivation at La Trobe University, benefiting thousands of patients.
Protected Northcote Golf Course and Preston Market while enhancing biodiversity and heritage.
Delivered community-focused initiatives, including building an animal shelter, free pet registration, water fountains for animals, Braille on banknotes, and quiet and prayer spaces in council facilities.
Beautified shopping strips, reinstated the Tyler Street tram stop, and built modern sporting facilities, boosting participation in women’s sports.
Gratitude and Farewell
Over the past 12 years, I have been deeply inspired by the connections and trust shared with residents, colleagues, and community groups. Together, we’ve achieved so much for Darebin, making it more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant.
Although I’m stepping away, my passion for Darebin remains unwavering. Thank you for the privilege of serving you, and I look forward to seeing our community thrive, with council continuing to support the vulnerable, the environment, and initiatives that positively impact lives.
