FLOWERS ARE YOUNGER THAN THE DINOSAURS

Picture a dinosaur world full of flowers. For most of their reign, there were none.

The first dinosaurs appeared about 230 million years ago. Flowers came much later.

For tens of millions of years, the land had no blooms. Just ferns, conifers and green giants.

The clear fossil record of flowers begins around 125 million years ago. Long after dinosaurs already ruled.

Then flowers spread fast across the world. By the late dinosaur age, they were everywhere.

So early dinosaurs never saw a single flower. But late ones, like T. rex, lived among them.

The colourful world we know is surprisingly recent. Younger than the giants that came before it.

INSECTS THE SIZE OF DOGS

About 300 million years ago, the biggest bugs ever crawled the Earth. Some were as long as a person is tall.

Meganeura was a dragonfly relative that actually flew. Its wingspan reached about 70 cm, like a hawk.

Arthropleura was a giant relative of the millipede. It grew over 2 metres long and half a metre wide.

It was the largest land invertebrate ever known. But it only ate rotting plants, not other animals.

Back then the air held far more oxygen than now. Around 30 percent, against 21 percent today.

Many say that extra oxygen let bugs grow huge. But newer studies question how big a role it played.

Arthropleura may have grown giant before oxygen even peaked. Lack of competition may matter more.

EVERY PERSON ALIVE SHARES THE SAME ANCESTORS

Trace anyone's mother's mother's mother back far enough, and all lines meet at one woman. Scientists call her Mitochondrial Eve.

She lived in Africa, very roughly 150,000 years ago. But she was not the only woman alive. Just the one whose female line never broke.

There is a male version too, Y-chromosomal Adam. He is the man all direct father lines lead back to.

Here is the twist. Eve and Adam never met. Their dates are tens of thousands of years apart.

Now count all your ancestors, not just one line. The number doubles every generation and explodes.

Do the maths, and everyone alive shares one ancestor from just a few thousand years ago. An ordinary, unknown person.

Go back a little further and it gets stranger. Everyone then living is an ancestor of everybody, or of no one.

EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD HAS FLIPPED BEFORE

Earth's magnetic north and south have swapped places many times. It has happened over and over through deep time.

The last full flip was about 780,000 years ago. A compass then would have pointed south.

These flips are not on a clock. Gaps between them range from 10,000 to millions of years.

A full reversal is slow. It can take thousands of years for the poles to fully switch.

About 41,000 years ago the field nearly flipped, then flipped back. It is called the Laschamp event.

During it, the field dropped to a fraction of its strength. More cosmic rays reached the ground.

The field is weakening a little now. But that does not mean a flip is due or coming soon.

EARTH'S FIRST LIFE MAY HAVE BEEN PURPLE

Look at nature today and you see green everywhere. Plants are green because of a pigment called chlorophyll.

But some scientists have a strange idea. Long ago, life on Earth may have been purple.

Billions of years ago, tiny microbes ruled the planet. They needed to catch sunlight to live.

Chlorophyll may not have come first. An older, simpler pigment called retinal may have done the job.

Retinal reflects purple light instead of green. So the microbes using it would have looked violet.

If they covered the early seas and land, the world may have had a purple tint. Green life came later and took over.

This is still just a theory, not a proven fact. But it means an alien world of purple life is possible.

HUMANS ALMOST WENT EXTINCT

A 2023 study says our ancestors crashed to about 1,280 breeders. That was roughly 900,000 years ago.

The population may have dropped by almost 99 percent. It stayed tiny for over 100,000 years.

This was long before modern humans existed. The survivors were an older human ancestor.

Some scientists doubt the number. Two later attempts to repeat the result failed.

A second near-miss is tied to a volcano. Toba erupted about 74,000 years ago.

That blast was the biggest in 2 million years. Some once said it left only a few thousand of us.

Most experts now think Toba has been oversold. People near India seem to have survived it fine.

EARTH'S DAY WAS 18 HOURS LONG

About 1.4 billion years ago, a day lasted just over 18 hours. Not 24 like today.

The reason is the Moon. It slows Earth's spin as it drifts away.

The Moon moves off by about 3.8 cm each year. As it goes, our days slowly get longer.

Think of a spinning skater. Stretch the arms out and the spin slows down.

One study found the day got stuck near 19 hours. It stayed there for a billion years.

Deep-sea tides fought the Sun's pull on the air. For an age, the two forces cancelled out.

Right now the day grows by a tiny sliver each century. In 200 million years it may reach 25 hours.

EARTH WAS A FROZEN BALL

About 720 million years ago, ice spread across the whole planet. This was the deepest freeze Earth has ever had.

Glaciers reached all the way to the equator. Ice sat where tropical beaches are today.

Scientists call it Snowball Earth. There were two of these events, lasting millions of years each.

Some think the oceans froze solid top to bottom. Others say a slushy band of open water survived.

Some of the best proof sits in South Australia. Ancient glacier rocks there formed near the old equator.

Life was still only tiny cells at the time. Somehow it held on through the ice.

Not long after the thaw, the first animals appeared. The big freeze may have set the stage for us.

EARTH MAY HAVE HAD RINGS LIKE SATURN

Saturn has its famous rings. But a new idea says Earth once had a ring too.

Scientists studied craters from 466 million years ago. Something strange stood out.

All 21 of them sat near the equator. If asteroids hit at random, that should not happen.

So researchers proposed a bold explanation. An asteroid drifted too close and was torn apart.

Its broken pieces spread into a ring around Earth. Then slowly rained down over millions of years.

That falling debris, they say, made all those craters. All landing in one band.

It is only a theory, and still debated. But for a while, Earth may have worn a ring.

GIANT SLOTHS THE SIZE OF ELEPHANTS

Sloths today are small and slow, hanging in trees. But their ancestors were giants.

One was called Megatherium. It was as big as an elephant.

It stretched about 6 metres from head to tail. And it weighed close to 4 tonnes.

It could rear up onto its hind legs. Standing tall to pull down high branches.

Its claws were huge, up to 20 centimetres long. Yet it ate only plants.

These beasts lived across South America. They died out about 12,000 years ago.

Early humans lived alongside them. Butchered bones suggest people even hunted these giants.
