When I first moved to Australia, these were some of the expenses that genuinely caught me off guard. 💸

Some of them are one-off costs, others become part of your everyday budget—but they’re definitely worth knowing about if you’re planning to move here or have recently arrived.

A few that made my list:

🚨 One of the biggest 1 July changes that I forgot to mention… Australian visa fees have increased.

Here are some of the major changes:

• Resident Return Visa (RRV): $490 → $1,475
• Partner Visa (820/801 & 309/100): $9,365 → $11,710
• Student Visa (500): $2,000 → $2,500
• Temporary Graduate (485): $4,600 → $5,750
• Skilled Independent (189): $4,910 → $6,135
• Skilled Nominated (190): $4,910 → $6,140
• Skills in Demand / Employer Sponsored (482): $3,210 → $4,015
• Working Holiday (417): $670 → $840
• Bridging Visa B: $190 → $575
• Visitor Visa (600 – Offshore): $200 → $250
• Visitor Visa (600 – Onshore): $500 → $630

When we signed our building contract, we thought we had a pretty good idea of what our house would cost.

What we didn’t realise was how many things weren’t included in the build price.

Landscaping, fencing, blinds, upgrades, council fees, security doors, garage storage… the list kept growing.

In the end, these “little extras” added over $50,000 to our budget.

If you’re planning to build a home in Australia, make sure you leave some buffer for the costs nobody talks about.

When Ved was a baby, I didn’t have a village here.

So I made sure we stepped out every week.

Some things were paid, some completely free, but honestly… these little routines helped me just as much as they helped him.

Baby swimming, rhyme time at the library, sensory classes, random walks with no destination — they gave structure to my week and got me out of the house on hard days.
