Someone asked yesterday for recommendations of things that had the sort of droning / psychedelic atmospheres of bands like Sunn, but with faster moving drums and percussion.

It’s almost an oxymoron, but Scarcity just about nail it on Aveilut. Experimental black metal out of Brooklyn, NY — brought to you by Brendon Randall-Myers (conductor of the Glenn Branca Ensemble since Branca’s passing) and Pyrrhon (amongst other projects) vocalist Doug Moore.

Coming up next week, we welcome Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa based artist Alexander 葉 L. Brown () in his first Australian solo exhibition.

Alexander 葉 L. Brown is a visual artist, designer, and musician working under the banner of Wrought Material — a multidisciplinary label rooted in underground extreme music culture — with a body of work spanning nearly two decades.

His immediately recognisable ultra-detailed ink drawings, commissioned for album covers, merchandise, posters and more, showcase infinite hours of the painstaking texture and surrealist form he has become known for since the late 2010s.

These works will be presented here in their true form, inclusive of subtle tonality and human detail often lost in digital and reproduced print media.

This event is proudly brought to you by Blacksound Records in conjunction with . Exhibition opens next Thursday, September 25 at 6PM.

We’re open 10-6 today as usual, online always via www.blacksound.com.au.

Please make welcome the Rod Cooper tape rack to the store. Designed and built by Rod himself, and installed / problem solved by the equally genius , our new rack is made from Douglas Fir, bits of metal and plywood, and parts scrounged from discarded (and presumed dead) tape machines.

For those who aren’t familiar with Rod, this tape rack is extra special because Rod has been inventing, crafting and performing on instruments and noise machines of his own creation for over 39 years. Employing tape, gadgets, mortal coils, drain spaces, bridge spaces, microphones, computers, wood, metal, paint, paper, plastic and glass in his instruments — Rod almost exclusively releases his own music on tape formats (some of which are stored as part of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia).

You can spy some of Rod’s own tapes along the top row of the rack, completely DIY and encased in wire, scrap metal and other found objects.

You can see the rack in the flesh 10-6 today, or shop our tape selection online via blacksound.com.au.

We’ve encountered some minor technical difficulties attaching our new tape rack to the wall, full reveal a little later once we’ve got that sorted.

In the meantime, here’s a bunch of new arrivals and restocks that just came in: including Sleep, Spazz, Impaled, Minor Threat, Haggus and that excellent Deathgrave / Black Ganion split.

Open 10-6 today, online as always via www.blacksound.com.au.

Rest in peace, our beloved tape section. This is the last time you’ll see this rack(s) which has served us well in store or in images, as it retires from the store after close to a year of service.

But fear not, tape lovers! Our tapes are not going anywhere, and in fact we’ll be able to store a lot more going forward. We have something special, part tape rack quasi-art piece, taking its place today.

Catch a glimpse 10-6, full reveal on your phone tomorrow.

Ok, this album rips. If you missed it we have copies new in (along with a bunch of other stock from ).

Forced Starvation is the debut self-titled album from a crew across the pond, and features members of STRESS GHETTO, M**H DRINKER, PIGGERY (and a bunch more) playing mean as hell 90s-rooted Grindcore with subtle hints of fastcore and brutal death.

Absolutely punishing stuff that really anyone into grind should dig. We’re already down to our last two copies on both CD/LP so if you’ve slept on this we recommend checking it out now.

Pick up a copy 10-6 today or online via www.blacksound.com.au!

New in on LP / CD / MC, the latest from and in The Dissolution of Eternity split.

Whitehorse deliver two building, brooding and brutalising noise drenched epics in their well established style of pulverising, churning, crushing and devastating sludgy doom, these recordings dug up, and revived from a pre-Death Weight session deliver world levelling heaviness.

UBOA scrapes up the debris left in the wake, wasting no time in constructing industrial towers of furious despair, drawing down a heavy mist of wraith filled dronescapes, before emerging into dark, yet beautiful and vast territories that slowly spring from foggy field, revealing triumphant and majestic peaks before obliterating your entire existence.

Essential listening for fans of sludge, doom, noise, experimental etc. A split where both sides complement one another perfectly in their extreme juxtaposition and similarities.

It’s been a big year for doom, with some stellar new releases and extra special reissues.

Stormcrowfleet, Skepticism’s monumental 1995 debut, remains a landmark of funeral doom — an album that defined both a sound and a legacy. This 30th anniversary edition of the classic was newly mixed from the original tape reels by Anssi Kippo in 2018 at Astia Studio under supervision of the band and is now freshly cut for vinyl.

“Stormcrowfleet was originally released on CD. Instead of taking the easiest route we wanted to make the vinyl version the best it can be. We bought the multi-track tapes at the end of the recording sessions back in the day and have stored them for possible later use. This use became the Stromcrowfleet reissue - not just a vinyl edition but a complete remix of the album from the original recordings.”

“In the remix sessions nothing was added or changed in the original recordings. The mix was done at Astia-studio with high quality analog equipment. In fact most of the equipment used did exist in 1995. What did not exist back in then was more than two decades of audio engineering tradition dedicated to processing extreme metal. In this process that tradition manifested in the form of Anssi Kippo - multiple award winning producer who handled the mixing in co-operation with the band members. In short the target was not to do a different mix but one with the original vision for the album with better equipment and engineering,” comments the band.

The 30th anniversary edition of Stormcrowfleet features two bonus tracks from the 1994 demo cassette AEOTHE KAEAR cut directly from the original studio master tape, released on vinyl now for the first time ever. Also including a special anniversary edition booklet illustrating the making of the album.

Stormcrowfleet (re)releases November 14 via Svart Records, and we have copies available to preorder now on black or amber and black smoke coloured 2LP vinyl or CD.

We also have a very limited number of copies of Aoethe Kaear, the band’s debut demo which is being reissued for the first time on a limited run of 100 cassette tapes.

Preorder via the website, www.blacksound.com.au, or ask in store. Open 10-6.
