📢 THE MIND SENSEI PODCAST – PART 1 WITH 9TH DEGREE MASTER CHUCK EPPERSON
I am honoured to release Part 1 of this 3 part interview with Mr. Chuck Epperson, 9th Degree American Kenpo Master and founder of Kenpo Kali.
Mr. Epperson’s lineage is one of the purest lines to Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker through his direct instructor Grandmaster Richard “Huk” Planas, who remains his mentor to this day.
In this first episode we explore his beginnings in the late 1970’s, training under the Parker-Planas lineage in Chico, California, shaping the foundation that would eventually evolve into a lifetime of study, innovation and respect for true principle-based Kenpo.

“Welcome, everyone, to a very special episode of The Mind Sensei Podcast.
I’m your host, Peter Tas, and today we honor one of the most respected and influential figures in the world of American Kenpo Karate — Senior Master of the Arts, Guru Richard ‘Huk’ Planas.
For over six decades, Mr. Planas dedicated his life to preserving, refining, and sharing the art of Kenpo. Known as the ‘Instructor’s Instructor,’ he was a man who didn’t just teach movement — he taught understanding, logic, and the deeper principles behind every technique.
In this memorial episode, we’ll be using a different format — involving our Deep Dive Team — to reflect on his incredible journey, his lifelong contributions, and the stories that defined him both on and off the mat. Together, we’ll explore his early beginnings under Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker in Fresno, his time with the legendary ‘Fresno Four,’ and his remarkable impact on generations of martial artists around the world.
This isn’t just a look back at one man’s life — it’s a celebration of a legacy that continues to shape the art of Kenpo today.
So join us, as we take a deep dive into the life, lessons, and lasting influence of Guru Richard ‘Huk’ Planas.”

RIP Sifu Richard “HUK" Planas

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell today to Grandmaster Richard HUK Planas.

Today, American Kenpo has lost the living encyclopedia of Kenpo.

Without a doubt, his teacher Ed Parker will be in heaven to welcome him with open arms.

Rest in peace, may his legacy continue in each of his students, friends, and family.
