Oh Hathras.
If God exists he left this place a long time ago.
A 19-year-old Dalit girl was gang-r*ped by four upper-caste Thakur men. Her spine was broken. She later died from her injuries.
Some caste context: India still lives under the long shadow of the caste system. A centuries old social hierarchy people are born into. At the very bottom are Dalits, once called “untouchables,” communities that have faced generations of discrimination, violence, segregation, and humiliation simply because of the family they were born into.
The accused men belonged to the Thakur community, a powerful upper caste in northern India. The girl was Dalit. So in normal day they won't touch her. But they know ra**ng her won't get them in trouble cause they are powerful.
But so far it's a normal day to day r**e of a woman story. Sure. Rapes are so common in India that people are immune to the news of it now. Cases like Nirbhaya and Abhaya are so common now, people don't care anymore. But but but this one goes darker than the crime itself.
In the middle of the night, the police cremated her body without the family’s consent. Her mother begged to see her daughter one last time. They locked the family inside their home instead. Just sad to see s**t like this happens in 21st century in a country that wants to be a superpower.
Not justice. Not humanity. Just power protecting power.
