Rolf and Courtney from Perth shoegaze band Wash talk about their 1991 self-titled tape, which has just been reissued as the first release on Chapter Music’s new digital reissue sublabel Chapter Epilogue.

Wash were early 90s shoegaze flagbearers in Perth, Western Australia, the most isolated capital city in the world. Original members were Rolf Farstad (guitar, vocals), Alan Matthews (bass), Courtney Babb (guitar), and Mark Bryceland (drums).
Rolf had been mailordering records through his local store since the late 80s, scouring NME and Melody Maker for tips and growing up on a diet of Dinosaur Jr, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, the Pale Saints and Ride.
They released just one 8 song demo cassette in 1991 and contributed a track (Klunk) to the very first Chapter Music release, 1992 compilation cassette Bright Lights Small City. They also had a track (Overhead Noodlehouse) on another 1992 compilation cassette Habitués, released by local recording studio Initiation.
After the tape release, Jamie Hamilton (also a member of grunge gods Benji and later Panel Be**er) replaced Mark on drums. By that point the band were listening to a lot more Sub Pop records and their sound was getting rockier. The band were over by 1993 but their recordings reveal a sense of space, dynamics, melody and innovation far more than the sum of its parts.

Breaking news from rock 'n' roll headquarters where the Board of Directors UNANIMOUSLY voted to announce groundbreaking ICONS of late 80s alternative music Rabbits Wedding - accurately described as "a fu***ng amazing shower of lights and beads..." by one critic - has signed an EXCLUSIVE agreement with Melbourne-based Chapter Music to re-release the band's ENTIRE back catalogue (previously distributed on vinyl by the quintessential Waterfront Records) on ALL digital platforms. Thank you for your attention to this IMPORTANT matter. The board would like to thank the band member's parents and the band's manager(s) and agent(s) for their help in this difficult time.

Formed in Perth, Western Australia, languid and bookish guitar pop quartet Rabbits Wedding relocated to Sydney from the mid 80s, when they were still in their late teens and early 20s.

Chapter Music is excited to announce new digital sublabel Chapter Epilogue, which launches today July 1.
Check it out at https://linktr.ee/chapterepilogue
There’s still so much amazing music of the past that doesn’t exist on digital platforms, from rare vinyl releases of the 70s and 80s, to cassettes and CDs of the 90s, even to CD-Rs of the pre-streaming 2000s. Chapter Epilogue is Chapter’s attempt to remedy this situation. Every two months we’ll be releasing 5 albums or EPs by artists from the 1970s to the 2000s (mostly Australian to begin with, but in time who knows?) whose music deserves a new life in the digital age.
CHE001 Wash - Wash - 1991 recordings by pioneering Perth, Western Australia shoegaze artists
CHE002 Rabbits Wedding - In Truth About Road - the 1986 debut single and EP from Sydney’s languid, bookish jangle-pop quartet
CHE003 Super Falling Star - Impact Event - complete recordings by Cat’s Miaow related Melbourne dream pop outfit formed in 1993
CHE004 Voigt/465 - Slights Still Unspoken - the most comprehensive overview yet of late 70s Sydney post-punk heroes
CHE005 The Northern Lights - Trouble Understanding - late 80s gentle acoustic pop from Perth quartet
This is something we have been percolating for years, so we’re very excited that it’s finally happening!
