Everyone’s generating their ‘80s self right now, so I asked what mine would’ve looked like as a Greek Australian. Swipe across… 👀

Three photos, three things that make us who we are.

The Patris. The ship that brought thousands of Greeks to Australia between 1959 and 1975. Piraeus to Fremantle and Melbourne, three to four weeks at sea, everything they owned packed into a suitcase and no idea what was waiting on the other side. This is the boat half of us have a family story about.

The kipo. Because no matter where we ended up, we turned the backyard into a piece of Greece. Tomatoes, fig trees, vine leaves, dirt under the nails. Some things don’t skip a generation. Still my happy place!

The Acropolis. The version of me that never left. Athens, 1985.

What am I missing? What’s the Greek Australian 80s memory that should’ve been photo four?

Disbelief. Shock. A legend has died.

The popular Greek singer was taken to Elpis Hospital in Athens after suffering cardiac arrest, according to reports.

Popular Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has died at the age of 54 after suffering cardiac arrest, according to reports from Greek media.

Mazonakis was taken by ambulance to Elpis Hospital in Athens, where doctorsattempted to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead despite the efforts of medicalstaff.

Greek Plateia has been granted access to The Ellinikon.

The largest urban project in Europe, for a first-of-its-kind content series filmed on the ground in Athens. The Ellinikon will also feature two flagship retail destinations:

🛍️ Riviera Galleria, Greece’s first organized premium shopping and dining destination, designed by Kengo Kuma, will span 23,000-square meters and aspires to bring together a curated mix of international and Greek fashion, lifestyle and dining concepts, from daytime to evening.

🛍️ The Ellinikon Mall, designed by Aedas, will be Greece’s largest retail destination, spanning 100,000 sq.m with 340+ stores. It features a hybrid, sustainable design, that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, to create an innovative retail, entertainment and leisure complex where visitors can shop, relax, and connect amid nature and innovation.
