Scientists have identified a new species of ancient whale, ‘Janjucetus dullardi’, from a 26-million-year-old fossil found near Jan Juc on the Surf Coast.

About the size of a dolphin, the sharp-toothed predator had large eyes and a short snout, making it a fearsome hunter in the region’s warm, shallow seas.

Discovered by local resident Ross Dullard in 2019, the fossil is the first mammalodontid to preserve both teeth and inner ear structures, offering rare insights into early whale evolution.

Researchers say the find sheds light on how ancient whales adapted to warmer oceans, knowledge that could help understand marine life’s response to climate change.

Police have identified the two victims of a suspected targeted attack in Mount Waverley as Athena Georgopoulos, 39, who was five months pregnant, and her partner Andrew Gunn, 50.

The pair were found dead inside their graffiti-covered home on Monday night, with Gunn reportedly decapitated.

Police say they are investigating whether the graffiti is linked to the deaths.

It’s understood several calls were made to triple zero before officers arrived, including one from an associate of the accused in NSW.

A 34-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested at Westall Station early Tuesday and has since been charged with two counts of murder.

Detectives say the accused was known to the address and no other suspects are being sought.
