Former ‘Neighbours’ actor Damien Richardson has been ordered to undergo a restorative justice process after being found guilty of performing an illegal Nazi-style gesture at a Melbourne event last year.

The 56-year-old must attend counselling, shadow a senior Jewish community leader, write a formal apology and visit the Jewish Museum of Australia and the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

A magistrate said Richardson knew the gesture was unlawful but carried it out anyway, and raised concerns about his lack of genuine remorse following social media posts criticising the verdict.

He was warned failure to comply could see the matter return to court, where he faces a fine of up to $23,000 or 12 months’ jail.

She told reporters he received an on-the-spot fine and lost his licence for three months.

A visibly emotional Premier said the couple were “embarrassed and shocked”, describing drink driving and road trauma as “incredibly serious”.

Ambulance Victoria is urging the community to take care as temperatures near 40 degrees across parts of the state today.

Paramedics say demand rises quickly during extreme heat, school holidays and peak travel periods.

They’re renewing urgent warnings about hot cars, with temperatures inside parked vehicles rising rapidly within minutes.

“Never leave children, older people or pets in a parked car. Not even for a moment. The risks are extreme and the consequences can be tragic,” Ambulance Victoria’s Michael Georgiou said.

Victorians feeling unwell due to heat should seek early medical advice.

For non-emergencies, care is available through the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department, GPs, Urgent Care Clinics, pharmacists or NURSE-ON-CALL.

Crime in Victoria has reached its highest level since records began, with new figures showing offences rose nine per cent in the past year.

The Crime Statistics Agency says theft is the main driver, surging by more than 37,000 incidents and pushing total crime up 10.8 per cent.

The data is the first released since the Allan government tightened bail laws and introduced a statewide machete ban, with ministers predicting crime will stabilise next year.

Police warn repeat and youth offenders remain a key concern, driving rises in theft, aggravated burglary and armed robbery across the state.
