🌟 Young Victorians Shine at the 2025 Maths Talent Quest Awards!

Budding mathematicians, families and teachers came together at the University of Melbourne for this year’s Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) Awards Ceremony - a celebration of curiosity, creativity and real-world problem-solving through mathematics.

Now in its 42nd year, the MTQ continues to inspire students to explore how maths connects to the world around them, easing maths anxiety, building confidence, and sparking future STEM pathways.

This year, more than 440 investigations from 50 schools reached Stage Two, with Victoria also achieving the highest number of awards nationally.

Research Study: Investigating Australian secondary mathematics teachers’ teaching practices

You are invited to take part in a research study about Australian secondary mathematics teachers’ teaching practices. We are seeking all secondary mathematics teachers who have taught or are teaching in Australian high schools to participate in one, two OR all three stages of data collection:

- Stage 1: Online questionnaire
- Stage 2: Online semi-structured interview
- Stage 3: Lesson observations at case study high schools
Pre-service teachers are not eligible to participate.

Michelle Cheung is conducting this study as the basis for a PhD project at the University of Sydney. This will take place under the supervision of Dr Ben Zunica (Lecturer in Secondary Maths Education) and Dr Bronwyn Reid O’Connor (Senior Lecturer in Secondary Maths Education). The ethical aspects of this study have been approved by the HREC of the University of Sydney [2025/HE000191].

There is no explicit closing date for this questionnaire, but submissions will close without notice once data collection for Stages 2 and/or 3 are complete.

Register for MAV’s 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲 𝗨𝗽 (𝗩𝗖𝗘) program.

This practical course is designed for teachers who are new to VCE Mathematics or wish to build on their current skills.

The program covers 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝟭–𝟰. Participants will take part in expert-led workshops and online sessions, and will 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗠𝗨 𝟳–𝟭𝟬 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 (𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 $𝟵𝟵𝟬).

Build Me Up (VCE) supports teachers across Victoria by 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝟭𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝗩𝗖𝗘. It focuses on building content knowledge, teaching strategies, and professional connections.
