A huge congratulations to author Judy Thompson and illustrator on the release of this powerful and beautiful book, that shares the vital message that every child has a right to their own language. We think this is a story that is more important than ever to share right now. Multilingualism, cultural knowledge, and community building are some core themes explored in this special book. 💙

🤫Behind the scenes of Howl with phenomenal illustrator 🐺

Howl was written by Kat Patrick, illustrated by Evie Barrow, and published in 2020. ✨

Can you tell us a bit about your illustration process for this book?:
First, I drew thumbnails with pencil on paper, then larger roughs on my iPad, before transferring those lines to the final art paper. The illustrations are drawn mostly in soft pastels, coloured pencils and graphite.

How do you turn your rough sketches into the final illustrations?:
After transferring the sketch onto the final art paper, I laid down the background colours in soft pastels, added details and more colour with coloured pencils, and created key outlines, depth and shading with graphite.

What’s the most challenging part of this process?:
Knowing when to stop and not overworking. Plus keeping a somewhat steady hand.

What tools and materials do you like to use for your illustrations?:
Coloured pencils are my favourite.

Any favorite brands or types of tools?:
My favourite brands of pencils are Faber Castell, Derwent Drawing, Caran D’Ache Luminance and Prismacolor.

Do you use digital tools or software in your work?:
Yes, I use Procreate on my iPad and Photoshop on my computer mostly in the planning and final editing stages.

What inspired the illustrations in this book?:
Kat’s words mostly. I’m inspired by manuscripts and search them for clues to illustrate. A mix of English and Australian settings inspired the book environment.

Were there any themes or elements from the story that influenced your art?:
The darkness and wolfishness of Maggie’s thoughts and feelings.

Foundation and are exceptionally proud to announce the three winners of our 2025 MIRROR Mentorship program for emerging bilingual writers and illustrators in kids’ literature are: Leila Frijat, Lia “Lima” Maula, and Huaning Wu.

Leila Frijat: “I deeply aspire to create a bilingual children’s book that reflects the multifaceted identities of Arab kids. I want to create an exploratory space for children who can often feel pressured to simplify or reduce their existence into a singular description of their identity.”

Lia Maula: “Growing up, I’ve had to move around between countries and cities, and I’d like to cater to an audience with the same experience in hiraeth. Adjusting to new environments as a kid can be difficult and I hope the things I work on can aid them in that experience.”

Huaning Wu: “I transitioned to illustration three years ago from a different field. Influenced by my mother, an art teacher, I grew up with a love for art and solidified my focus on illustration during university. Since then, I have been dedicated to exploring diverse styles and expressive techniques to bring stories to life for young readers.”

This program provides a year-long mentorship with Zeno Sworder, Sher Rill Ng, and Freda Chiu respectively, plus publishing masterclasses, industry networking opportunities and a $4,000 stipend for each mentee.

The Judy: Black Box

Children’s picture books offer spaces for children to explore both their own current experiences and new or unfamiliar situations. The books represented in this lineup help children familiarize themselves with kindergarten, explain it’s alright to make mistakes, and learn how to connect with both their family and the world at large.

The authors of these children’s books, Vera Ahiyya (Look How Much I’ve Grown in KINDergarten), Waka T. Brown (Perfect), Dane Liu (Laolao’s Dumplings), Raquel MacKay (I hear a Búho), and Margaux Meganck (Speck) will be joined by moderator Nora Ericson (Too Early) to share what goes into creating picture books that draw young readers into these important learning moments.

🎨✨⁠

Today’s Illustration Monday features the beautiful art of Kim Hyo Eun in her new picture book How We Share Cake. Kim Hyo Eun is the second daughter of five brothers and sisters, and shares the joys and battles of sharing and compromising in a family of five children.

Learning how to share with one’s siblings or friends is a core childhood memory for so many us. Truly understanding how to care for others while caring for the self is one of the trickiest life lessons to be learned!

What is a memory you have from your childhood about sharing? We’d love to know! Some of the Scribble team share their memories below ✨ ☁️

Sophia: I’m three years older than my little brother. For the first part of our lives, I was the big one and he was the little one. I wasn’t very good at sharing, I would steal food off his plate when he wasn’t looking, and I would win each of our running races. Now at 6 ft 2, he’s the big one and I’m the little one. I always share my food with him when we spend time together. But I haven’t raced him in a running race since he grew bigger than me, (some wins are never worth sharing!)

Mick: I remember sharing fish and chips with my brother and sister near the beach. At first, it was easy: we would battle to find the biggest chip. The middle part: brother and I would also seem to eat as fast as we could. But nearer the end, it was harder: we would battle for the best crunchy ship or try and avoid the black ones, until it was all over. Some things haven’t changed, still can’t seem to slow down when eating chips, and I still appreciate finding a really big one.
