Remittances from Solomon Islands seasonal workers in Australia and New Zealand have fallen by 21 percent, dropping to SBD289 million as of September this year, compared to the same period last year.
The decline has caught the attention of Leader of Opposition Matthew Wale, who sought an explanation from Central Bank Governor Dr Luke Forau during the Public Accounts Committee hearing into the 2026 Appropriation Bill 2025.
In response, Dr Forau explained that most of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) workers had completed their two- to four-year contracts and returned home, which contributed to the decrease in remittance inflows.
βMost of the PALM workers who were contracted under two to four years had their contracts end last year. So, most of them have returned home, resulting in the drop,β Dr Forau said.
He added that while some new workers have since joined the scheme, the number has not yet offset the outflow of returning workers.
Mr Wale, however, noted that with the number of Solomon Islanders now working under the scheme reaching 10,000, remittances should have surpassed half a billion dollars this year.
Last year recorded the highest remittance inflow on record β SBD431 million in 2024.
