Tristan's Highlights from Screen Forever 39 - Awards Night!

Always a great way to wrap up the past three days with the annual SPA Awards, plus party it up at the Gala Party. It’s an absolute highlight to celebrate with friends (both new and old), but is also the best chance to “go rogue” to make that one last connection with someone.

Thanks for another awesome time at Screen Forever, and I hope to see you there again next year!

Last day to check it all out and soak up more industry insight and pitch your ideas. You gotta bring back Red Light, Green Light again next year! It was a true delight to see industry writers/directors develop and pitch ideas to commissioners live in under 15min! Also, the candy station was all kinds of awesome!

This was the busy day! Lots of meetings, lots of talks and lots of networking. Didn’t get a chance to take too many pictures but it was great to see so many industry panels and talks discussing what the future holds for film & TV, especially with a focus on talent emerging from the online creators space. Plus got to see Rita host a panel! Go Rita! 🤩

An awesome start to one of the best screen industry events in Australia! Although it was more lowkey than the days to come, it was great to meet up and catch up with old friends, but also make some amazing new ones.

The 48Hour Film Project was a blast as always and is such a great team-sport for filmmakers! It had been 5 years since the last one and we were grateful to pull a team together, write the film, shoot and edit it all within a weekend.

Thank you to everyone who was a part of this project! We're all here for the laughs and good vibes and fortunately it must be the winning concoction as we made a great film 😊

Last Call won for Best Film and Best Lead Actress in the 2024 48 Hour Film Project, which meant our film was in competition at Filmapalooza in Seattle earlier this year, where Lyanna won another award for her great performance!

Of the 500+ films entered into Filmapalooza, Last Call was one of the 24 films selected to screen at the Rendez Vous Short Film Corner at Cannes on the 21st/22nd May 2025.

Meet the Cinematographer from Last Call - Nicholson Ren! ✨

Nicholson Ren is a Malaysian-Australian Cinematographer and Producer based in Melbourne, Australia. He studied accounting and finance at Melbourne University but began his career in the film industry immediately after graduation.

His work is primarily in narrative fiction forms with a focus on cinema. In 2023 his short film Jia with long time collaborator Vee Shi was nominated for an AACTA Award and has screened in over 30 film festivals internationally while also winning multiple national awards.

While in-between personal projects he has also been part of the Camera and Video Team on studio projects such as La Brea (2021-2022), Ricky Stanicky (2023) and Betterman (2024).

Meet the Director of Last Call - Tristan Braines! ✨

Obsessed by the allure and spectacle of film and TV from a young age, Tristan is a film producer, writer & director, plus co-founder of Toprock Productions, a Melbourne-based production company, created soon after he graduated film courses from Swinburne & VCA.

Under Toprock Productions, Tristan has helped produce a multitude of projects, including films as part of previous 48-Hour Film Project (each consecutively winning the audience choice award), the awarding winning mental health film “If Only” and music videos for several local musical artists, including Mojo Pin and Mammal.

He was a participant in the Screen Australia & Youtube initiative Skip Ahead 8 in 2023, where he helped produce & co-direct the award winning web series “Life of Kea”, which currently has over 8 million views over its 5 episode run and related promotional content.

He is currently developing “Life of Kea” for TV, as well as a brand new web series called “Boba Bing”. He recently participated in the Melbourne 48 Hour Film Project 2024, where he directed and produced the short film “Last Call”, that took home the win for best actor and was one the top films at Filmapalooza in Seattle. The film itself will be screened at the Short Film Corner as part of the Cannes Film Festival this year. He is a current member of both AACTA & Screen Producers Australia.

Meet our Cast for "Last Call" ✨

Taysha McFarland as the Receptionist
Taysha is a multi-award winning producer, director, writer and founder of Toprock Productions. Recently she produced the AACTA-nominated short film ‘Jia’, directed by Vee Shi, and produced and co-directed the Screen Australia and YouTube supported comedy web series, ‘Life of Kea’ as part of the Skip Ahead 8 initiative. Both projects were nominated in the 38th Annual Screen Producers Awards with ‘Jia’ winning for its category. Taysha also produced the Multicultural Arts Victoria-funded film, ‘Eating the Other’, which premiered at Flickerfest 2023 and most recently, ‘Last Call’, directed by Tristan Braines, which will be screening in the Cannes Short Film Corner.

Taysha started acting at the age of 5 and has since been cast in multiple roles for screen and stage, including "Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree" performed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. She was also a host on "Media Strikes Back" on Channel 31 and played "Sarah" in the 2023 feature film, "Not for Sale", filmed in Orlando, FL. Taking a step back from acting, Taysha has focused her creative juices towards writing, directing and producing.

Meet our Cast for "Last Call" ✨

Lyanna Kea as Kathy Lee
Lyanna Kea is a Malaysian Chinese actor and producer. Her comedy series 'Life Of Kea', funded by Screen Australia, was recently nominated for Best Online Series Production Of The Year 2023 by Screen Producers Australia, and made the Official Selection for Chinatown Film Festival LA. Lyanna was also awarded Best Actress for her theatre performance in V-DAY.

As an online content creator with over 11 Million fans globally, Lyanna was recently announced Top 5 Australian Breakout Creators on YouTube. She loves entertaining and connecting with her audience base through relatable comedy skits.

Award-winning animations featuring Lyanna's voice acting work were screened at several festivals including the Sunshine Short Film Festival and Los Angeles Horror Film Festival.

Lyanna was awarded Best Lead Actress in the 48Hr Film Project, Melbourne for her role in Last Call. She also took the award home for Best Supporting Actress in Filmapalooza, Seattle for the same role.

Berlin Lu as Darren Lu
Berlin Lu is a Chinese-Australian Actor who has worked globally in US, Canada, Dominican Republic & China. Next to be seen in new series COOLIE starring Louise Wong ("Anita") which he won in a worldwide search and showcases his elite Martial Arts. Recently seen on Disney+ THE CLEARING opposite Guy Pearce. Berlin has won Best Actor Awards in 2021, 2023, 2024.

Berlin's performances are imbued with an empathy. His early experience, caregiving to his parents has influenced his work, giving him a unique perspective on mental health.
