Mushroom Giant

Mushroom Giant Psychedelic post rock from Melbourne Australia, writing instrumental music for our collective head space. Spending the rest of that year touring as a 5-piece.

Mushroom Giant is an Australian instrumental rock band featuring members Craig Fryers (bass), Trent Horwood (drums), Simon Wade (guitar/keyboards), and Derek Richards (guitar/keyboards). Never a band to imitate anyone else’s sound, Mushroom Giant is an honest reflection of the four members that write and perform it. Central to the band’s style from the outset is the willingness to improvise with a

ll members adding to the creative process, with song ideas plucked from the bits that yield character. Forming in 2002, Mushroom Giant released their first album "RAILS" in 2003. In 2004, Mushroom Giant played the Queenscliff Music Festival and then Phillip Island’s Pyramid Rock Festival on New Year’s Eve 2006 (with the likes of Karnivool, The Living End and Silverchair). Then in 2008, Mushroom Giant released their second album “KURU” on which they follow a theme set by a Whitley Streiber novel. The ‘night club scene’ track “Graven Image” had some airplay on Melbourne’s Triple J radio and was used in a promotional video for the Bell’s Beach Surf Classic. Kuru was then followed up in February 2010 by “Antarctic Angel” featuring five tracks with vocals by long-time collaborator, David Gogerly. In 2014, Mushroom Giant supported US instrumental rockers Pelican and soon after were back in the studio finishing off their third full-length album, “PAINTED MANTRA” (released via Bird’s Robe Records in 2015). Quote: "They’ve always been a band with a talent for creating epic, cinematic soundscapes, but with this album Mushroom Giant have taken it a step further. The sheer scope of the album is incredible. This isn’t a record you can just drop in and out of at random. It’s an experience, an hour-long voyage through a spectral brew of prog, post-rock, metal and Eastern-influenced rock. And they manage to do it all without vocals..." – WAYNE MARSHALL (Beat Magazine, Aus)

In 2015, after playing to a capacity crowd at Rock The Bay festival, Mushroom Giant was honoured to play support to British rock legends URIAH HEEP. A highlight for a band inspired by ’70s guitar rock. In 2022, Mushroom Giant has so far released two new tracks, "Owls" and “Vestige” (via Bird’s Robe Records), and will be releasing a new album “IN A FOREST" later in the year. MUSHROOM GIANT will be returning to the live stage after a year’s hiatus working on our fifth album, due out early in 2026 via Bird’s Robe Records.

It was a huge couple of years for us doing shows both in Australia and Europe, gigging with the likes o Russian Circles, Mono, Yawning Man, Hubris, and playing the legendary Dunk Festival in Belgium with God Is An Astronaut, And So I Watch You From Afar, Mono, Caspian, Godflesh, Amenra, and We Lost the Sea. It was during these years that we managed to write and road-test a whole array of new material for what has now become the basis of album #5.

INTERNATIONAL KARATE are a hugely influential post-rock 4-piece from the 2000-2010 era with their 2003 album “Weapons of Mass Protection” being cited as one of that genre’s best Australian releases. This will also be their return show after a long hiatus and promises to be a very special occasion for both bands.

Pre-sale tickets are $20 or $24 at the door … if not sold out). Shotkickers is 744 High St, Thornbury. Get along, support awesome live music.
