🌈 Learning Through Playdough Creations

Today, children explored playdough as a creative and expressive medium, transforming simple materials into meaningful representations. Using their hands, children shaped and modelled a variety of creations including sea creatures (jellyfish, turtles), animals, festive figures (gingerbread person, candy canes), and imaginative characters.

Children demonstrated strong creativity and problem-solving skills, deciding what they wanted to make and how to construct it. They experimented with colour mixing, rolling, pinching, flattening, and joining techniques, strengthening their fine motor muscles and hand–eye coordination.

As children shared their creations, they engaged in storytelling and conversation, explaining what they made and why. This supported language development, confidence, and social interaction, while also fostering pride in their work.

My Family Through Foam Block Play”

During quiet play time, children explored large foam blocks to represent their family members. Using different shapes, sizes and colours, children thoughtfully constructed people who are important in their lives.

In the first image, two sisters who attend care together worked alongside each other to create their family. They built mum, dad and two sisters, carefully placing the foam blocks close together. Their constructions reflected strong family bonds, shared experiences and a sense of belonging. The sisters communicated their ideas confidently and supported one another during the building process.

In the second image, another child created mum, dad and a little sister. The child used taller and shorter foam blocks to represent size differences between family members, demonstrating early mathematical thinking, spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.

In the third image, one child chose to build their grandmother. While constructing the figure, the child shared that they were missing their grandma. The foam block play provided a meaningful way for the child to express emotions, memories and attachment in a safe and supportive environment.

Through this open-ended foam block experience, children demonstrated creativity, storytelling, emotional expression and confidence. The activity supported children in representing their world and communicating their feelings through play.

Christmas Story Time – Nativity Sensory Setup

Today we set up a Christmas story time experience using a Nativity scene and sensory loose parts to help children explore the meaning of Christmas in a hands-on and engaging way.

The setup included Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, the three wise men, farm animals, a shining star, and natural materials such as hay and coloured nut shells. These loose parts created a rich sensory environment where children could touch, move, sort and arrange the materials while listening to and retelling the Christmas story.

As the story unfolded, children actively participated by placing characters into the stable, moving the animals around, and creating their own versions of the story. Some children carefully matched animals together, while others focused on storytelling, naming characters and describing what was happening. The textured materials encouraged sensory exploration, fine motor development and concentration.
