You know oddly, I have been in a bit of a weird place since my film came out. I mean it was a great first experience and it was received well. I just found, looking around the room after the screening, there were very few women of colour in the room. Very few South Asian people. Very few people I could make eye contact with and share an inbuilt understanding of shared experience. I was very grateful for those who did come to me and share that they “got it”- because racial micro aggressions affect them too. But it did make me wonder about the future of representation in Australia. Who are the gatekeepers and audiences.

But more than anything, I think I missed “my people”- my family, friends and community- and the chance to debrief about these very personal subjects with them.

I hope and look forward to sharing film with more of you in the future! ✊🏽

Ok 2023- I am ready and excited to take you on! I have a feeling its going to be a magic year ✨I’m kicking things off by flying back from Canada to Sydney today for the world premiere of my directorial debut at 2023 this weekend!

Honestly I can hardly believe how busy the last few months have been. I left Aus in October and went to Ecuador for 2 months and absolutely fell in love with it. And then I was so happy to come back home to Canada for a wonderful holiday season with my family, friends and wonderful Aussie partner who had his first Canadian Christmas. And now, I have this unexpected trip back to Aus.

I feel so absolutely blessed and full of gratitude for all these experiences and opportunities and people in my life. Can’t wait to see where this all takes me, I have my big girl pants on now!

Eating the Other is a film that was inspired by the critical race essay “Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance” by bell hooks.

It follows the story of an enigmatic Brown woman as she carefully navigates her love life, professional life and family as racial tensions simmer. But when she finally reaches a boiling point, she can no longer suppress her appetite for a pound of flesh.

This film is a deeply personal reflection of my experiences as a marginalised woman. I made this film for my community- because our stories and experiences matter. And because I will not be subsumed by a system and power structure that does not know me. I am writing my own story now.

Thrilled to announce my first film as writer/director has been accepted in competition in the biggest short film festival in Australia: Flickerfest 2023!

What I discovered through the process of directing “Eating the Other” is that sometimes, if you don’t see the way you’re doing things out there in the world already, then maybe YOU just have to be brave and do it yourself. It’s terrifying on some levels, especially as a woman of colour (this is why representation matters) and triggers my anxiety. But I felt driven to keep going because that’s kind of the point of the story I’m directing. It’s about showing up for yourself, representing yourself even and especially when you don’t see it out there in the world.
A massive shout out to my whole cast and crew- what an amazing team I had for this project. You should all be so proud of yourselves!

Throwback to last day on set for
This guy right here is such a big player in bringing ETO to life. His attention to detail, work ethic and just being an over all gun working on an indie budget film was amazing. Not to mention how beautifully he framed and shot everything!! And now he is even doing the colouring and making the film looking AH-MAZING! Thank you so much .ren for helping me bring my vision to life. Those detailed shot lists you, and I made were just the stuff of my geeky dreams!

Not long to go now before I leave! Emotions have been running high for me lately and I think it’s manifesting in my body/anxiety a bit. Some bts of the first day of shooting . I had completely dislocated my shoulder 2 weeks previous to this and was running on adrenaline and painkillers. But luckily I had the most wonderful and supportive people around me to get through that first location schedule at the gorgeous restaurant. My wonderful scene partner was helping me rehearse a tricky scene where I needed to use my good arm and look at my hard working crew in the background there: and doing the most amazing production design and assisting .ren in the camera dept along with 🥹
Honestly I had the BEST crew a girl could ask for. I owe pulling this off to all of you- even those not pictured here! My all female producing crew eeee!! I’ll tag you all in the next one. More photos by the wonderful to come!
