Eighteen months ago I received a phone call from Wendy Mason, telling me the story of Allan Godfrey’s World War II journey and asking if I wanted to help her and journalist Patrick Carlyon capture Allan’s and other veteran and volunteer stories as part of a video project for the Caroline Springs RSL Sub-Branch.
That evolved into the 55-minute documentary, Those Who Serve. Filming days throughout the last year and half. Countless editing hours. Poring through Australian War Memorial archives and other sources of historical footage and photos as we pieced it all together, doing our best to honour the stories we were told.
It was a huge canvas but it was all connected - and for me it was a genuine privilege to work on this project over that whole time (and I’m not quite done yet!)
On Saturday 15th June we had the launch of Those Who Serve at Southern Cross Grammar, attended by around 200 guests.
The response was incredible, I’m quite overwhelmed by all the kind words and also the level of care that was put into the event itself. It wasn’t just a screening- it was a celebration. I was delighted that Sarah and a few family members were able to join me for this special day, it won’t be one that I forget anytime soon.
