Professional Historians Association Victoria & Tasmania Our members are academically trained and qualified, but work in the public field rather than in universities. Some work as heritage practitioners.

The Professional Historians Association (Victoria & Tasmania) Inc represents a thriving, dynamic community of professional historians who communicate history in diverse ways. The skills of professional historians are invaluable in documenting, interpreting and presenting history on many levels and, accordingly, our members work in a variety of areas. Some professional historians consult, working o

n commissioned histories and short term contracts. Others work in museums, local councils or cultural institutions. PHA (Vic) provides professional historians with support and assistance in their day to day work, promotes the discipline of history as a profession and encourages a high standard of scholarship and practice. PHA (Vic) also assists individuals and organisations to engage the services of a professional historian. PHA (Vic) maintains links with Victorian universities, government and heritage bodies, museums and local history organisations. PHA (Vic) is a member of ACPHA (the Australian Council of Professional Historians Associations). Under the auspices of this peak body, PHA (Vic) admits members in accordance with nationally recognised accreditation criteria and standards. All PHA (Vic) members are bound by ACPHA’s Code of Ethics and adhere to a nationally accepted and recommended Scale of Fees.

Oral History Australia is seeking one or two people to fill the voluntary role of editor for our journal Studies in Oral History. The role offers the opportunity for an experienced oral historian to give back to our community and/or for an early to mid-career oral historian to develop their skills. In recent years the role of editor has been filled by two people. Studies in Oral History is an open-access academic journal providing peer-reviewed articles as well as reports and reviews of interest to the broader oral history community. For further information go to: https://lnkd.in/gkK6JEPR. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 22 November 2025.

Historians love to talk about history to anyone who will listen but even more so with other historians! 22 PHA (Vic & Tas) made the journey to hot and steamy Larrakia country (Darwin) for this year's PHA Conference, hosted by PHA (NT). We enjoyed a packed program of pre-conference activities that informed our understanding of the Larrakia people, the bombing of Darwin, the important contribution of the Chinese to Darwin's history, the devastating impact of Cyclone Tracy and so much more.

We extend our grateful thanks to all the PHA and affiliated members who gave fascinating and insightful presentations on their work, to Sam Wells and the PHA (NT) members for hosting us, Lucy Bracey, outgoing PHA President for pulling so much of the Conference together and of course, the indomitable Richie Fejo, for welcoming us to Larrakia Country, a place like no other in Australia!

See you in Victoria in 2027!

On Tuesday, why not celebrate History Month at the PMI Victorian History Library with a truly inspiring event, “In Conversation with Professor Clare Wright OAM: A Monument of One’s Own”.

Date: 7th Oct @ 6:30pm
Location: PMI Victorian History Library

Professor Clare Wright is one of Australia’s most influential historians and our proud library patron. This session will see Clare explore the fascinating stories behind Victoria’s public monuments and share the journey and impact of her acclaimed project, A Monument of One’s Own. Through her passion for commemorative justice, Clare invites us to reflect on whose stories are celebrated in our streets, and the remarkable lives yet to be recognised.

Can I Help You? Recognising and Improving Artificial Intelligence as History Maker

Thursday, 16 October at 6 pm
State Library Victoria Theatrette, Melbourne

This year's History Council of Victoria Inc. Annual Lecture from Distinguished Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington AO explains how AI offers of help are part of a wider invitation for us to recognise AI as history maker.

Using examples, it shows how AI makes meaning from past data to make recommendations for the present and the future. It also argues that seeing AI as history maker is important for making better AI technologies, and histories. Knowing what histories are written about you and others, and knowing how those histories can be made is critical for social and economic health.
