Glucocorticoids taken for less than 3–4 weeks rarely cause adrenal insufficiency and can be abruptly stopped for most patients. When taken for longer than 3–4 weeks, they can usually be rapidly reduced to a physiological dose – 5 mg of prednisolone or equivalent – then more gradually tapered as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis recovers.
