Our spine of chaos, where colours collide with textures, held together by pressed palms. This collage forms a grounding motif throughout our pages, each story with its own tone and style captured through expressive typography, colour (or not), texture, layout and graphics – layers of stories accreting with layers of design.

Thankyou for photographing ‘Stories of Collision’.

‘Stories of Collision’ captured by – a series of striking images showing off the irreverent beauty of the printed form, and the world in which the magazine exists; one full of collisions. Hard stone and soft fabric form an unconventional pedestal, two hands push and pull its pages, delicate paper meets coarse stone, colour clashes with colour, a powerful spread sits a-top marble cracked just after a strike. Thankyou to Annika, whose mastery of light and composition has lifted the chaos of collision across the pages into such a poised scene.

Extra ty for the studio & for the extra pair of hands 💋

Piercing birdsong at dawn. Petrichor reeking after rain. Planets groaning in celestial orbit. This is the journey from space to subterranean silt with Sonorous Root, Silken Soil.

Unfurling over five vignettes, the piece is an invitation to comtemplate the natural sounds of Earth. – artist, evolutionary biologist/archaeologist, writer and composer – weaves these beautiful words amidst an original score, which you can listen to as you read. She quite literally has recorded and rearranged the natural world, from distorting grains of soil grinding together on Dharug country to stretching the deep metallic churning from an archelogical expedition in Sri Lanka.

Taking inspiration from Victoria’s deconstructed and reassembled field recordings, emulated the process in their designed layout and image-making. Weathered stones, fragmented crystals and relics from fictional places spread across the pages. Mike & Muriel began with realistic 3D renders, reducing clarity to the point of pixel destruction. In its lowest poly-form, the rocks and relics take on a QR-code-like quality, before being reinterpreted once more by the printer in the form of overlapping CMYK dots on paper. The page design is treated like a cross-section of soil, where layers of storytelling are compounded above and below each other in an organic game of Tetris.

It’s one of our treasured collaborations in Issue 03 – story, sound and silky design coming together to reflect and experiment. The result is one you’ll have to see, and hear, for yourself.

Yeah you read that right, we’re now officially distributed around the world* by none other than 🫦

‘Stories of Collision’ made the 3-month journey all the way to London; shipped quite literally across the seas. We’ve looked up to Antenne since we started Soft Stir—a distribution platform for an immaculate selection of small artist presses outside the publishing mainstream. So this a mega milestone for us.

We exist to softly stir different disciplines of the creative community across Australia together. We also give emerging and early-career writers, artists and all those in between, a platform to reflect, experiment and ultimately get their work published in print.

The opportunity to have ‘Australian’ creatives showcased worldwide is huge for us, and our community.
