Piercing birdsong at dawn. Petrichor reeking after rain. Planets groaning in celestial orbit. This is the journey from space to subterranean silt with Sonorous Root, Silken Soil.
Unfurling over five vignettes, the piece is an invitation to comtemplate the natural sounds of Earth. – artist, evolutionary biologist/archaeologist, writer and composer – weaves these beautiful words amidst an original score, which you can listen to as you read. She quite literally has recorded and rearranged the natural world, from distorting grains of soil grinding together on Dharug country to stretching the deep metallic churning from an archelogical expedition in Sri Lanka.
Taking inspiration from Victoria’s deconstructed and reassembled field recordings, emulated the process in their designed layout and image-making. Weathered stones, fragmented crystals and relics from fictional places spread across the pages. Mike & Muriel began with realistic 3D renders, reducing clarity to the point of pixel destruction. In its lowest poly-form, the rocks and relics take on a QR-code-like quality, before being reinterpreted once more by the printer in the form of overlapping CMYK dots on paper. The page design is treated like a cross-section of soil, where layers of storytelling are compounded above and below each other in an organic game of Tetris.
It’s one of our treasured collaborations in Issue 03 – story, sound and silky design coming together to reflect and experiment. The result is one you’ll have to see, and hear, for yourself.
