Variety is key…

That is certainly the case with par-threes in terms of length, direction and design.

If a course has four par-3s, having 1-2 short holes, one long and the rest somewhere in between is an ideal mix in my opinion.

One of Australia’s iconic long par-threes is the 8th at Lake Karrinyup in Perth which stretches to 201 metres from the back tee.

We’re going remote with this one…

Dysart Golf Club, Queensland 🇦🇺

A small mining town close to three hours’ drive inland from Mackay, Dysart’s local nine-hole course is now an important community hub for locals.

In particular, Friday nights at the golf club provide a popular social outing with families coming together for dinner.

In 2024, the golf club was the recipient of $1.4 million in government grants which it has used to renovate its clubhouse, build a children’s playground and upgrade its irrigation system.

There are golf courses with gentle opening holes and there are golf courses with difficult opening holes.

The Metropolitan Golf Club on the Melbourne Sandbelt has the latter.

Well positioned fairway bunkers tempt longer hitters into cutting the corner which can lead to disaster.

If you find the fairway, you still need to navigate your way onto a green well protected by bunkers and a steep swale at the rear.

Do you like a stern test right out of the gate or a gentler start to ease you into the round?

At Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth, you get the latter. Its short par-4 first hole is under 300 metres and slightly downhill but by no means is it a simple hole.

For those who can reach the green, trying to is fraught with danger in the form of bunkers and dense scrub - especially to the right.

For most mere mortals, leaving your tee shot close to the right fairway bunkers is the ideal result to give yourself the best angle into the green.

I wonder how often long hitters try to drive this green when it’s their 10th hole of the day rather than their first…

It’s hard to take bad photos at this place…

Barnbougle - on Tasmania’s northern coast - is one of the planet’s great golf destination with two world-class courses (The Dunes & Lost Farm) and an awesome short course (Bougle Run).

Pictured is Lost Farm’s par-3 4th hole which sits on a windswept strip of coastline wedged between Bass Strait and the Great Forester River.

Short on the card but packed with decisions, it’s a hole that tempts, tests and always delivers. The view from above is superb but so too is the vista as you stand on the tee with the ocean to your right and the township of Bridport visible in the distance.

Add the morning light and coastal mist, and you’ve got one of the most photogenic spots in Australian golf.
