UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Wednesday reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during an official visit to Oman.
In a post on the social media platform X, Lammy wrote: “We’re making every diplomatic effort to help secure a ceasefire in Gaza. Oman remains a valued friend and key player in the region. Important to speak with Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi today as we advance this vital work together.”
His remarks come as the war in Gaza, now entering its ninth month, has resulted in the deaths of at least 57,700 Palestinians, according to local health authorities. A significant majority of the victims are reported to be women and children.
Israel’s extensive aerial and ground assaults have devastated critical infrastructure across the Gaza Strip, triggering what international agencies describe as a severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations has repeatedly warned of acute shortages of food, medicine, and clean water, describing the situation as “catastrophic” and calling for an immediate end to hostilities.
In November 2024, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
Separately, the International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel is responsible for acts of genocide in Gaza, following a case brought by the South African government.
As international negotiations continue in pursuit of a ceasefire agreement, observers caution that the ongoing conflict risks deepening the humanitarian disaster and further destabilizing the region.
