📼 Another piece of Australian kickboxing history brought back by Fight Rewind!

Back in May 1995, the Australian kickboxing scene was producing some seriously tough fighters and “Diamond” Dale Westerman was right in the middle of it.

This was old-school Australian kickboxing: hard rounds, big challenges and fighters willing to put everything on the line. 💥

Westerman was part of the Melbourne fight scene and trained under respected martial artist and coach Bryce Birtwistle. Birtwistle's documented list of fighters includes Westerman alongside several other well-known Australian combat sports names.

And 1995 would become a huge year in Westerman's career.

Just months after this bout, “Diamond” Dale Westerman stepped onto the international K-1 stage in Japan, facing Japan's Taiei Kin at K-1 Revenge II in Yokohama on September 3, 1995. The fight went the full five rounds, and Kin won by unanimous decision.

That makes this footage even more interesting; we're looking back at Westerman during the same year he would go on to compete on one of the biggest kickboxing stages in the world. 🌏🔥

Rewind to a time when women’s kickboxing in Australia was still fighting for recognition. In July 1994, two warriors stepped into the famous Festival Hall ring for a battle that forms part of Australia’s early women’s combat-sports history. 👊🔥

SONGUL “DIAMOND” ORUC was a genuine pioneer. Oruc describes herself as Australia’s first female World Kickboxing Champion, and says that during the 1990s women were not permitted to fight in the ring. Through persistence, she helped push for women to be allowed to compete across Australia. Her titles included East Coast, South Pacific, Australian Kickboxing, World Kickboxing and World Thai-boxing championships.

Her career later expanded internationally into professional boxing. Oruc fought in the United States and defeated Jeanne Martinez by TKO in 1998. In 2000, she defeated Alicia Ashley by split decision, and contemporary women's boxing rankings placed Oruc No. 5 in the world at junior lightweight.

But before those international battles came nights like this one…

This was a special night in Australian kickboxing history. For Amir “Prince Amir” Shafiypour, it was his first fight in Australia after gaining experience in Turkey and Thailand — and he made an immediate impact! ⚡

Amir caught the highly respected Scott Bannan by surprise and stopped him by TKO in the opening round. 💥

But the story didn't end there…

🔥 FOUR YEARS LATER — THEY MET AGAIN! 🔥

In 1999, Bannan and Shafiypour crossed paths once more at the Magic Millions Showroom in a Muay Thai bout. This time, Scott Bannan got his hand raised, winning by decision. 👊

Scott Bannan went on to become one of Australia's most accomplished fighters. In a later interview, Bannan recalled finishing his career with 67 fights, 60 wins and 12 titles, including three world titles, competing across junior middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight. 🏆

Amir Shafiypour also built an incredible international legacy and was later described as a three-time world Muay Thai champion, with ISKA and WAKO world titles among his achievements. 🌎🏆

Two warriors. Two generations of Australian fight history. And two unforgettable chapters in a rivalry that spanned the 1990s. 📼🥊

📼 Another classic from the Fight Rewind archives!

Before social media, streaming platforms and instant highlights, fighters built their reputations the hard way — travelling, fighting and taking on whoever was put in front of them. 🌏👊

This classic matchup brought together New Zealand’s Shane “Choppa” Chapman and Australia’s John Wayne “The Gunslinger” Parr.

Chapman, fighting out of Auckland’s City Lee Gar Gym, became one of New Zealand’s leading kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters. He went on to become a four-time Muay Thai world champion and a two-time K-1 Oceania MAX champion, establishing himself as a serious international competitor. 🇳🇿🔥

And then there was Wayne Parr.

“The Gunslinger” became one of Australia's greatest Muay Thai exports. After travelling to Thailand and training with legendary Thai fighter Sangtiennoi Sor Rungroj, Parr built a remarkable career that included 10 Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Championships, King's Cup and S-1 tournament victories, and battles against some of the world's best strikers. 🇦🇺🏆

This fight came at K-1 MAX Oceania 2002, held at Melbourne Town Hall on November 26, 2002.

Both fighters had already fought earlier in the tournament before meeting. Chapman had defeated Ryland Mahoney, while Parr had stopped Alex Tui. The winner would advance toward the tournament final. 💥

What followed was a classic encounter from an era when Australian and New Zealand fighters were regularly testing themselves against the world's best.

Here’s another piece of Australian fight history from the FightRewind archives!

Holly Fennely and Rebecca Russell stepped onto the main card at a time when women’s kickboxing was still fighting for recognition. During the 1990s, female participation was growing, but women still faced serious barriers in Australian combat sports.

Holly would go on to become a significant figure in Australian women’s kickboxing. Archival sources refer to her as “The Wild Cat” and document her later world-title achievements and her fight against restrictions on women competing in NSW.

But this night was about two women stepping through the ropes and being part of the story. 🌹

Whatever the result, these are the fighters we should remember when looking back at how far women’s combat sports have come.

Rewind to July 1994… 📼

Melbourne’s iconic Festival Hall hosted another night of classic Australian kickboxing as the Strictly Business promotion brought together some of the toughest fighters of the era.

One featured battle saw Jarrod “Hitman” Curtis face Isa Ramadani for the Australian Kickboxing Title. 🏆🥊

It was a genuine back-and-forth contest, with both fighters refusing to give an inch. After the final bell, Curtis took the points decision and claimed the Australian title. 🏆

But the Ramadani fight was only one chapter in the career of The Hitman.

FightRewind1 has previously featured Curtis against Graham Weddell, as well as his memorable victory over a young Sam Solomon at Rumble at the Radisson in Melbourne. 🔥

Solomon would go on to become one of Australia's most successful professional boxers, making these early kickboxing battles a fascinating part of his combat-sports journey.

These fights are more than just old footage — they are snapshots of the golden era of Australian kickboxing, when fighters built their reputations in tough local contests at legendary venues. 📼🥊

📼 We’re heading back to June 1998, when Ediz Bekir stepped into the ring against the colourful “Hot Chocolate” on the Ultimate Promotions – STAR WARS fight card! 💥

This is another rarely seen piece of Australian kickboxing history brought back from the archives by FightRewind1. 🥊

The late ’90s was a special period for Australian kickboxing and Muay Thai. Before YouTube, social media and streaming, fighters built their reputations the old-fashioned way — training hard, stepping through the ropes and putting it all on the line in front of a live crowd. 👊🔥

Ultimate Promotions was part of that era, putting together fight nights such as Star Wars, giving fighters like Ediz Bekir and “Hot Chocolate” the opportunity to showcase their skills under the lights.

These old recordings are more than just fights — they’re a time capsule of an Australian combat-sports scene that deserves to be remembered. 📼💯

Unfortunately, very little information from these events has survived online, which makes footage like this even more important.

⏪ Melbourne, 26 November 2002.

The early 2000s were a special time for Australian kickboxing, with K-1 bringing international fighters and some of Australia's toughest names together in the ring.

At Melbourne Town Hall, Greece’s Michael “Iron Mike” Zambidis faced Papua New Guinea’s Billy “Blade” Kian Mamu in a 70kg K-1 MAX showdown. 🇬🇷🇵🇬🇦🇺

Zambidis was already a dangerous and highly experienced fighter for his age. He had started competing professionally in 2000 and had already collected major titles including the W.O.K.A. World Championship and the W.I.P.U. King of the Ring Thai Boxing title. He was becoming known for his aggressive pressure, explosive punching and knockout power.

And the years that followed would cement Iron Mike as one of the great names of the K-1 MAX era.

His career included huge international wins over Albert Kraus, the reigning K-1 MAX champion at the time, and Japanese star Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.
His official website credits him with 158 career wins and 87 knockouts, along with world titles from several major organisations.

Across the ring was Billy “Blade” Kian Mamu — a fighter from Papua New Guinea, fighting out of Parañaque in the Philippines. Unfortunately, detailed records of Mamu's wider career are scarce, making this footage an especially interesting piece of fight history.
