During the depths of winter, Dr. Gonzo set out across the Goldfields region in a converted VW delivery van—doubling as both a mobile studio and a one-room bedsit—to record song introductions from local artists for The Goldfields Sessions, a new audio series on 3CR celebrating the music and voices of regional Victoria.

The journey began in the hills above Chewton with a visit to Doc Henry. Known off-air as Steve Charman, Doc Henry is a veteran community radio presenter who began his broadcasting career in the 1980s on Melbourne’s PBS FM and 3RRR.

For the past 15 years, he’s hosted Open Tuning, an eclectic weekly show on Castlemaine’s MAINfm.
In addition to his work behind the mic, Charman is also an accomplished guitarist, singer, and author. In 2023, he published The Coliban Main Channel: A Walking Guide, an exploration of the historic waterway running from Malmsbury to the Crusoe Reservoir near Bendigo.
With his deep musical knowledge and genuine passion for community radio and local culture, Steve was the ideal collaborator for the debut episode of The Goldfields Sessions, where he curated and introduced tracks by Castlemaine artists.

Over the next five episodes of And This One's Introduced By... Dr. Gonzo will present a series of artist-led features spotlighting Goldfields musicians including Doc Henry, Mandy Connell, Rebecca Tolhurst, and David Thrussell—each introducing their music and sharing the stories behind their songs.

Doc Henry joins Dr Gonzo to introduce the tracks from a selection of music from Castlemaine artists on And This One’s Introduced By… on community radio 3CR.
Tune in on Wednesday, 23th July 2025, at 11 PM
on 3CR for "And This One’s Introduced By..."
Presented by Dr Gonzo, featuring Steve Charman, who’ll introduce a selection of songs from Castlemaine artists.
