HOMEWORK CLUB RECAP – THURSDAY AFTERNOON ON 97.9FM

DJ Will here with a recap of another fantastic Homework Club radio show!

First, let me introduce the amazing crew who helped bring the show to life. We had one of our youngest teams on air, with Year 7 students Leijana, Ruby, and first-time broadcaster Eliza, joined by Behram from Year 9, who was also making his radio debut. They all did an outstanding job behind the microphone!

COMMUNITY NEWS HEADLINES
This week's local news included:
• Families Celebrate Opening of Major New Community Centre in Weir Views
• Community Invited to Help Document Melton's Post-War Transformation
• Melton Celebrates Budget Boost While Calling for More Infrastructure Investment

SPECIAL GUEST
We were delighted to welcome Ms Natasha Cahill, Staughton College's Junior Attendance Administrator. Natasha brought plenty of energy, laughter, and insight to the program, giving our listeners a great understanding of her important role within the school community.

HISTORY MOMENT
The team also learned about National Vegemite Day, celebrated on June 16, and discovered the history behind one of Australia's most iconic spreads.

THE LEGENDARY HOMEWORK CLUB CHALLENGES

⭐ History Quiz
The team and our guest listened carefully, with only one incorrect answer across the entire quiz!

⭐ Word of the Week: Lagerphone
A musical instrument made from a pole with bottle caps attached that is shaken or struck to create rhythmic sounds.
Congratulations to Ruby and Behram for answering correctly!

⭐ What Am I?
A huge congratulations to newcomer Eliza, who correctly guessed "Pig" on just the second clue!

CHALLENGE CHAMPION
Eliza took home the legendary Miss Piggy Rock and was genuinely shocked when she won! What an incredible effort on her very first radio show. As Challenge Champion, she also earned the honour of introducing Australia's most downloaded song, "Like A Prayer" by Josh Fawaz, which remains at number one for a third consecutive week.

THANK YOU
A huge thank you to Ms Natasha Cahill for being such a wonderful guest and sharing her experiences with us. Thank you also to Leijana, Ruby, Eliza, and Behram for their enthusiasm, confidence, and teamwork on air.

A special shout-out goes to Daniel, who came along to support Behram during his first show. Your encouragement and support were greatly appreciated.

Join us next Thursday from 4:00pm for our final Homework Club show of Term 2.

Until then, have a wonderful and safe weekend from the entire Homework Club family!

Homework Club Show Recap – Thursday Night on 979FM

Last night's Homework Club may have had a smaller crew than usual, but that certainly didn't stop us from delivering a fantastic show!

With two students unable to attend, twins Charlotte and Heidi stepped up to take on the extra workload and did an outstanding job throughout the program. Their professionalism, confidence and teamwork were on full display, and they absolutely nailed it.

The girls kicked off the show by bringing listeners the latest community news, including:

Melton Celebrates Refugee Week with Free Community Events Highlighting "A Million Stories"

Final Diggers Rest Night Market Set to Bring Global Flavours, Live Music and Family Fun.

Melton Residents Invited to Share Memories for New Post-War History Project.

We then welcomed our special guest, Dan MacDonald from Staughton College's Facilities and Maintenance team. Whether he's planting trees, maintaining gardens or fixing things around the school, Dan plays an important role in keeping Staughton running smoothly.

During our Big 5 interview, Dan shared stories from his career journey, both before and during his time at Staughton College. One of the night's biggest surprises was discovering that our very own "Mr Fix-It" once worked in childcare!

Dan also delivered an engaging history lesson about The Beatles' historic Australian tour of 1964, setting the stage for our weekly challenges.

🏆 Challenge Results
✅ History Quiz – Everyone answered correctly. Paying attention certainly paid off!
✅ Word of the Week: Querent – A person who asks a question or seeks advice. Correctly answered by Dan and Heidi.
🦛 What Am I? – Dan correctly identified a Hippopotamus and claimed the legendary Hippo Rock!

Congratulations to Dan, who was crowned our Challenge Champion and earned the honour of taking home the Hippo Rock. He also helped close out the show with Australia's most downloaded song for the second consecutive week, "Like A Prayer" by Josh Fawaz.

A huge thank you to Dan for joining us and giving the show his stamp of approval, to Heidi and Charlotte for stepping up when we needed them most, and of course to all our listeners across 979FM for tuning in.

We'll be back next Thursday from 4:00pm with more community news, special guests, quizzes and Australia's hottest downloads.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend, Homework Club family!

HOMEWORK CLUB RECAP – THURSDAY'S SHOW

What a fantastic edition of the Homework Club we had yesterday!

Joining me in the studio were Alex, Mia, Daniel and Karma, who once again did an outstanding job co-hosting the program.

We kicked off the show with this week's Melton Community News, covering:

🔹 Outstanding Volunteers Honoured as Melton Announces Its 2026 Community Champions
🔹 Melton's Future Gets a Boost with Major Funding for Roads, Rail and Essential Infrastructure
🔹 Celebrating Local Success: Entries Open for the 2026 Melton Business Excellence Awards

Following the news, it was time to welcome our special guest, Ms Danniele McEachnie, Classroom Teacher of Business Management, Literacy and Humanities at Staughton College.

It was a pleasure to have Danniele join the Homework Club for the very first time. The crew and I put her through our famous "Five Big Questions", and she provided some fascinating insights into her teaching career and her role at Staughton College. Danniele also shared important Staughton College news and upcoming key dates before helping launch our History Lesson, which focused on the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 4 June 1989.

🏆 CHALLENGE TIME 🏆

The crew listened carefully during the History Lesson, with everyone answering their quiz questions correctly.

Word of the Week: (Karyotype)
An individual's complete set of chromosomes, or a laboratory image showing them. Impressively, only one crew member missed this question!

What Am I? Challenge
After a highly competitive battle, Danniele emerged as our Challenge Champion by correctly identifying the answer: Eagle!

As Challenge Champion, Danniele proudly took home the legendary Homework Club Eagle Rock (and no, not the song!) to display on her desk as a reminder of her victory.

The Challenge Champion also earns the honour of introducing Australia's most downloaded song of the week. Danniele closed out the show with "Like A Prayer" by Josh Fawaz.

A huge thank you to Danniele, Alex, Mia, Daniel and Karma for making the show such a success.

We'll be back next Thursday from 4:00pm on 97.9FM when our special guest will be Dan McDonald from the Facilities Department at Staughton College.

Until then, have a safe and enjoyable week, Homework Club family!

Last night’s Homework Club was one to remember, so let’s break it all down!

First up, the amazing crew joining me in the studio were Tay, Cherry, Chloe B. and first-timer Chloe A. And yes… for the first time in 12 years on air, I had TWO students named Chloe hosting the same show. Did it get confusing? Absolutely! But both girls were fantastic.

A special shoutout goes to Chloe A. on her debut show. I already knew she had talent after hearing her on Breakfast Radio, and last night she proved she’s a natural behind the microphone. Outstanding first performance!

The crew kicked off the afternoon by delivering some important community news stories, including:

📌 Entries officially opening for the 2026 City of Melton Business Excellence Awards, recognising customer service, innovation, sustainability and workplace culture. Applications close Thursday July 9 via the City of Melton website.

📌 The 2026 Melton City Libraries Short Story Competition is now open, celebrating 21 years with more than $3,000 in prizes up for grabs. Entries close July 10, with authors Andrew McDonald and Demet Divaroren involved in judging events.

📌 Melton residents dealing with tumbleweeds were reminded to report issues through Council’s online enquiry form. Tumbleweeds can be placed in red bins, while bagged collections can also be arranged.

After community news, it was time to welcome our special guest — Ms Kelly Wade, Maths Teacher at Staughton College. The crew were especially excited because Kelly teaches most of them! During our interview, we discovered that not only is she talented with numbers, but she’s also handy with a cricket bat, captaining her own cricket team. Love that!

Kelly also delivered our history lesson for the evening, focusing on Voting Rights Reform in Australia in 1962, which then launched us into our three challenges of the night.

📚 Word Of The Week: “Keck” — meaning to retch or choke.

At the end of all three challenges, Chloe B. claimed victory as our Challenge Champion for the second time in her young radio career, correctly guessing “Milkshake” in our What Am I challenge. Congratulations Chloe B!

To close the show, Kelly shared an important update with our listeners regarding Staughton College’s proposed rebrand. As part of the school’s upgrades and future direction, consultation is now open on possible new school colours, logos and uniform concepts aimed at making uniforms more affordable for families. Parents, carers and students are encouraged to check Compass and provide feedback before Friday May 22.

Massive thanks to Tay, Cherry, Chloe B. (our Challenge Champion), Chloe A. for an outstanding debut, and of course Ms Kelly Wade for joining us and sharing her insights with the Homework Club family.

We’ll catch you all again next Thursday from 4pm as we welcome back the Melton South Primary School crew to the airwaves!

What a fantastic afternoon we had yesterday on The Homework Club radio show!

Hello everyone, DJ Will here! Last night I was joined by the future stars of Homework Club radio announcing — Tyson (Year 8), Humaira (Year 8), Leijana (Year 7), and first-time announcer Ruby (Year 7).

Without a doubt, this was one of the youngest and least experienced crews I’ve worked with this year. Before yesterday’s broadcast, Tyson, Humaira, and Leijana had each only completed one show, while Ruby was making her radio debut. But honestly, you never would have guessed it! After some Breakfast Radio training at school, they stepped up to the challenge with confidence and absolutely nailed it.

The crew delivered our Community News segment brilliantly, covering stories including:
• Melton City Council’s record-breaking $255 million Draft Budget for 2026/27
• The launch of Council’s annual Community Satisfaction Survey
• Free evening access to local sporting facilities across the municipality until October

After Community News, it was time to welcome our special guest, Mr Corey Barton — Leading Teacher and Director of Numeracy & Maths for Years 10–12 at Staughton College. What many may not know is that Mr Barton is also a former Staughton College student who returned years later as a teacher, making his story even more inspiring for our students.

The crew asked Corey plenty of questions about his journey from school life to becoming a leading teacher, and he shared some fantastic advice and experiences along the way.

Corey also presented our History Lesson, focusing on Australia’s Coat of Arms, officially granted by King Edward VII on May 7, 1908.

Then it was time for our challenge segments:
History Quiz
Word Of The Week
What Am I?

This week’s Word Of The Week was “Villose” — meaning covered with fine, soft hairs; shaggy or furry. Nobody managed to guess it correctly, including our guest!

The final challenge, “What Am I?”, was won by our first-timer Ruby, who correctly guessed Gorilla and took home the Gorilla Rock as our newest Challenge Champion! Congratulations Ruby — an amazing effort on your very first show!

A huge thank you to Mr Corey Barton, Tyson, Humaira, Leijana, and Ruby for helping entertain our Homework Club family yesterday afternoon.

We’ll be back again next Thursday from 4pm for our special Careers Week edition of The Homework Club on 97.9FM — don’t miss it!

What a fantastic show we had on Thursday afternoon! I was joined by an awesome crew—Abby, Amelia, Haylee, Angelique and Summer—who brought great energy to the studio.

A big highlight was welcoming our special guest, Mr David Reid, Staughton College’s Senior School Principal. Even though he’s only been at the college for a short time, it’s clear he’s already making a strong impact. It was an absolute pleasure having him on the show!

The team put Mr Reid in the hot seat with our 5 Big Questions, taking us on a journey through his career—from his very first job at KFC to his pathway into education and leadership at Staughton College. His answers were thoughtful, professional, and entertaining—our listeners loved it!

What a way to wrap up Term 1! The studio was absolutely buzzing for our final show—packed to the brim with energy, excitement, and three brand-new voices hitting the 979FM airwaves for the very first time.

Another Thursday means another Homework Club recap on 979FM! Today’s crew brought the energy—Haylee, Daniel, Shehbaaz, and first-timer Chloe, who absolutely smashed her debut. Welcome to the Homework Club family, Chloe!

Our special guest, Daryl Thompson from Staughton College’s Facilities team, shared her inspiring journey from primary teaching in the Philippines to studying in Australia to become a secondary English and Humanities teacher.

Daryl also delivered a fascinating history segment on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which opened in 1932. A symbol of hope during the Great Depression, it took eight years, 1,400 workers, and six million rivets to complete. Haylee and Chloe kicked things off strong on the scoreboard!

In Word of the Week, Daniel, Shehbaaz, and Daryl nailed the definition of “Virgate.” Heading into the final round, it was anyone’s game—but Daniel clinched the win in “What Am I,” correctly guessing a chilli to become today’s Challenge Champion!

We also covered community updates, including Sons of the West, Melton City Girls Can, and the “Culture Connects Us All” exhibition at Melton Library.

Big thanks to Daryl and the crew for an awesome show—catch you next Thursday from 4pm!
