Before it was St. George’s Caye, the island had another name!

Eighteenth-century Spanish maps called it "Cayo Cosina," "Casina," and other variations, often associated with the name “Kitchen Caye.” By the mid-1760s, the English name St. George’s Key had emerged, believed to honor St. George, England's patron saint.

Historic maps reveal the transition, including a detailed 1764 map of the early settlement and a 1775 map showing both the older Spanish-derived name and St. George’s Island.

The island was already an important center for the British Baymen long before the historic Battle of September 10, 1798. In fact, the battle was named after the island, not the other way around!

This September, discover the fascinating history behind one of Belize’s most recognizable names.
