Birdsville to Betoota 🍻

From Birdsville, we made our way out to Betoota… and if you haven’t been before, do yourself a favour and add it to the itinerary.

There’s something pretty special about these little outback places. The characters, the stories, the hospitality… it’s all part of travelling this country.

And while you’re at Betoota, make sure you’re hungry!

Have one of Robbo’s home cooked meals when you stay. Trust me… you will NOT be disappointed! 😂👌

Great food, great hospitality and another one of those places that makes an outback trip about so much more than just the tracks you drive.

Who’s spent a night at Betoota? And more importantly… what did you have for dinner? 😂

One Last Farewell From the Simpson 🦘

Just before we left the Simpson, a few of the locals came out to see us off.

The emus farewelled us as we made our way around the last of the detours, over Little Red and towards Birdsville.

After all those red dunes, salt pans, flowing water, corrugations and everything else this crossing had given us, it was a pretty fitting way to finish another Simpson adventure.

We rolled into Birdsville, had a quick call in while making our way out of town, then it was time to keep moving.

There’s always something about leaving the Simpson that gets me. That red dirt grounds me like nowhere else, and every crossing leaves me wanting to come back again.

Until next time, Simpson. ❤️

There’s something pretty incredible about coming off the red dunes of the Simpson and suddenly finding yourself looking across a salt pan that seems to stretch forever.

For a moment, the landscape completely changes.

Wide open, flat and exposed, with nothing but the Landy, that enormous sky and the next line of red dunes waiting in the distance.

Photos never quite capture just how vast this country feels when you’re standing in the middle of it.

And as beautiful as these salt pans are, they’re also something you treat with respect. Conditions can change quickly, and what looks hard and dry on top can be a very different story underneath.

Another part of the Simpson that makes every crossing an adventure.

Who’s crossed the Simpson and remembers that feeling of heading out across the salt pans?

There’s Something About That Red Sand

Every trip into the Simpson Desert does something to me.

That red sand just grounds me in a way that’s hard to put into words.

Maybe it’s the silence. Maybe it’s the endless dunes, the huge skies, or simply being somewhere that forces you to slow down and forget about everything else for a while.

Out there, life feels pretty simple.

Drive the next dune. Find somewhere to camp. Light the fire. Watch the sun disappear. Wake up and do it all again.

I’ve travelled a lot of Australia, but there’s something about the Simpson that resets me every time.

Some places you visit.

Others you feel.

The Simpson is definitely one I feel.

Where’s that place for you?

You Wouldn’t Believe This Is the Simpson Desert! 🤯🌿

If you picture the Simpson Desert, this probably isn’t what comes to mind.

Look how GREEN it is… and there’s a creek actually running through the middle of it!

Red dunes surrounded by greenery, water flowing and life everywhere. I’ve travelled through this country plenty of times over the years, but seeing the Simpson like this was just mind blowing.

It’s one of the things I love about travelling Australia. Just when you reckon you know a place, Mother Nature completely changes the picture.

Would you believe this was the middle of the Simpson Desert if I didn’t tell you?
