Frosty is safe on trail rides, loves the beach and water, good in traffic and can be led from vehicles and other horses.

Iโ€™ve owned Frosty since he was a 3yo and he has been my horse through countless adventures, competitions and milestones. He was never bought to be sold, however over time my circumstances and goals have changed and I simply donโ€™t have the time to give him the opportunities he deserves in the areas he truly excels.

Frosty is the ultimate all rounder with a solid foundation and experience across a wide range of disciplines some including:
- Barrel Racing
- Pole bending
- Team Penning / Arena Sorting
- Campdrafting
- Ranch / Western events
- Ag Shows
- Pony Club (Gymkhanas / jumping)

Previously I have focused primarily on barrel racing with Frosty. He showed plenty of talent over the few competitive years. Winning Futurity, Maturity and 2D Champion for NBHA and ABHA although I no longer believe heโ€™d be suitable as he hasnโ€™t been able to handle the extra pressure of higher competition expectations- willing to further discuss as he may be fine for small jackpots or for a junior without high expectations.

Frosty has worked at the racetrack as a โ€œClerk of the Courseโ€ horse proving to be capable of ponying difficult horses. I have played around at liberty with him but havenโ€™t made the time to be fully established although he can be ridden ba****ck and bridle-less.

Frosty is the sort you can pull out of the paddock after time off and get straight back to work. He has had riders ranging from beginners (under supervision) to experienced riders and is known for his versatility, trainability and willing nature.

I truly believe Frostyโ€™s ideal home would be with someone interested in any cow events or simply wanting a versatile performance horse that can turn to almost anything.
He deserves to be out doing what he loves and have someone enjoy all he has to offer rather than sitting in the paddock.

The management of Australia's wild horse population, commonly known as brumbies, remains one of the most controversial wildlife issues in the country.

As of June 2026, the NSW Government has resumed aerial shooting operations in Kosciuszko National Park as part of its Wild Horse Heritage Management Plan. The stated objective is to reduce wild horse numbers to a legally required target of 3,000 horses within designated retention areas by mid-2027. Recent government surveys estimate there are currently between 6,476 and 16,411 wild horses within the park. The wide range reflects the difficulty of accurately counting horses across such a large and rugged landscape.

Aerial culling involves trained marksmen operating from helicopters to shoot wild horses from the air.

Under NSW protocols, shooters are required to target vital areas of the horse, typically the chest or head, with the intention of causing rapid unconsciousness and death. Follow-up shots are required if an animal is not immediately incapacitated. Operations are conducted by trained teams following animal welfare procedures developed for aerial shooting programs.

The intended outcome is a quick death. However, as with any lethal wildlife control method, debate exists regarding the welfare outcomes for individual animals. Animal welfare concerns are one of the primary reasons aerial culling remains controversial.

Aerial culling is not selective for s*x or age classes.
Mares, stallions, juveniles and foals may all be present within targeted populations. The objective is population reduction rather than the removal of specific horses.

Because wild horses live in family bands, the removal of individuals can disrupt social structures within the herd.

The NSW Government's position is that wild horses are causing significant environmental damage within Kosciuszko National Park.

Government agencies and environmental scientists have identified impacts including:

- Damage to alpine and subalpine vegetation
- Trampling of wetlands and peatlands
- Erosion of waterways
- Degradation of habitat used by threatened native species
- Soil compaction and reduced regeneration of native plants

Kosciuszko National Park contains some of Australia's most fragile alpine ecosystems. Government monitoring has reported signs of vegetation recovery in areas where horse numbers have previously been reduced.

For this reason, horse management has been approved as part of broader conservation efforts within the national park.

A common criticism of the brumby program is that horses appear to receive disproportionate attention compared to other introduced species.
However, wild horses are not the only animals being controlled.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service also undertakes control programs targeting:

- Feral pigs
- Deer
- Foxes
- Rabbits
- Wild dogs

These species are also recognised as causing environmental damage within national parks.
Critics argue that more public attention is directed toward brumbies because horses are culturally valued animals, whereas other feral species often receive less public sympathy.

Rehoming has been used for many years and remains part of the current management plan.

Thousands of horses have been trapped and rehomed, while others have been removed through passive trapping and ground shooting. However, authorities argue that rehoming alone cannot remove horses quickly enough to meet population targets across the vast and inaccessible terrain of Kosciuszko National Park.

Supporters of alternative management methods have proposed:

- Expanded rehoming programs
- Fertility control
- Sanctuary programs
- Greater private adoption initiatives

The NSW Government has recently indicated that fertility control trials are being considered, although aerial culling remains part of the current strategy.

The government has not publicly released a specific target number for the current operation.
The stated objective is to reduce horse numbers to 3,000 animals within designated retention areas by June 2027.
The exact number removed will depend on future population surveys and population growth rates.

Importantly, the current management plan does not aim to completely eradicate brumbies from Kosciuszko National Park. The plan retains a population of 3,000 horses within designated areas of the park.

Under the current NSW management framework, yes.
The existing plan specifically allows for the continued presence of wild horses within designated retention zones.

However, many advocates remain concerned that ongoing reductions could diminish the genetic diversity, cultural presence and long-term viability of some brumby populations.

Few animals occupy the same place in Australia's national identity as the brumby.

Wild horses have lived in Australia for more than 200 years, descending from escaped, released and lost horses brought by European settlers.

Some bloodlines trace back to station horses, cavalry remounts, stock horses, draught horses and animals used during Australia's military history. While not every brumby is directly descended from war horses, many carry genetics linked to the horses that helped build rural Australia and served alongside Australian soldiers.

Brumbies became immortalised in Australian folklore through stories such as The Man From Snowy River and have become enduring symbols of freedom, resilience and life in the high country.

Their ability to survive drought, harsh winters, rugged terrain and limited resources demonstrates remarkable adaptability.

Many horses removed from the wild have gone on to become successful riding horses, endurance horses, stock horses and beloved family companions.

The brumby debate sits at the intersection of two deeply held values:
On one side are those focused on protecting Australia's unique alpine ecosystems and threatened native species.

On the other are those who see brumbies as an important part of Australia's cultural heritage deserving protection and humane treatment.

Both perspectives are represented in public debate, and the challenge facing governments is balancing environmental conservation with cultural values and animal welfare concerns.

For those who wish to become involved, the most effective actions include:

- Reading the management plans and scientific reports firsthand.
- Contacting local Members of Parliament.
- Making submissions during public consultation periods.
- Supporting reputable conservation, welfare or heritage organisations.
- Participating respectfully in public discussion.
- Supporting responsible rehoming and adoption programs.

NSW residents can contact their local state MP, as well as the NSW Minister for the Environment and the NSW Premier, to express their views.

Regardless of where people stand on the issue, informed and respectful engagement remains the most effective way to influence future policy.

The brumby debate is about far more than horse numbers.

For some Australians, these horses represent environmental pressure on fragile landscapes. For others, they represent living history, resilience and a connection to generations of Australians who lived and worked alongside horses.

What is certain is that thousands of wild horses have already been removed, and many more will likely be affected in the coming years.

Whatever your position, it is worth remembering that real animals and real people sit at the heart of this debate, park rangers, scientists, horse advocates, rehomers, local communities and the horses themselves.

For those mourning the loss of Australia's wild horses, and for those working tirelessly to protect what they love, this remains an emotional and deeply significant chapter in Australia's history.
