Land based tiger shark NEWCASTLE!!!!!
Just finished off this tiger jaw for the boys that caught it back in June, this was a local land based shark and from measurements would have been roughly 350kg!!!!!
While I’m talking land based and beaches, I thought I’d take a chance to give some advise to those just starting out.
I went into hot tackle at Warnersbay today to get some braid and top shot and I’ve never seen so many bull spools, it’s usually so hard to find, the boys said that land based shark fishing has been getting more and more popular all the time lately.
I thought I’d so a post that i probably should have done a while ago with a few tips to avoid the s**t show that can follow this sport.
1. When looking for a beach to fish, you don’t want to be near people, people in the water scare fish away, sharks are in the shallows hunting fish, this also eliminates the “attracting them” garbage people go on with, you do not need burly on a beach, I never have and will never use it and we get sharks 90% of the trips we do.
2. Find spots that are empty, sharks will be traveling south, along literally every beach from Qld to Victoria over the next 6 months, there is no specific beach to fish, all the sharks will swim past all the beaches at some point. When im looking for beaches, I fish quiet places with no swimmers or other shark fisherman, that way if a shark swims down the beach and I’m the only on there, I’ll likely catch it.
3. If you accidentally catch a grey nurse, DO NOT get it out the water for a photo, they are everywhere now days and they do not release well, get in the water and get the hook out fast or cut it off ASAP, these things are a licence to print money for dive companies they advertise by using them and offering a “rare” experience, they will try to get any area that they are caught shut down with the (critically endangered) crap.
4, avoid the media, they will climb all over you for a story and throw you to the woke. Daily fail and news. com .au are the worst of the lot and would sell their own mother for a good story , they need you, you don’t need them, no matter what happens, they will make you the bad guy, this is ok for us as we have a great backing, if can be daunting for individuals though.
5. Have a look at the pics with the writing I put up before tagging or participating in tagging programs, these comments are directly from the head of the bullshark research team and for a team that is meant to make the ocean safer for people, they seem a bit lopsided, but that’s just my personal opinion.
6. if you plan on keeping one for the jaw, please DONT just leave the rest of the shark on the beach. For starters, I’ll get the blame 😂😂, and it’s a bad look. Be prepared and make sure you cut the shark into small pieces and throw it all back in the water, sit there for halfa and make sure it doesn’t wash back up, it takes time and it’s hard work, but we often spend 2/3 hours making sure there’s nothing to suggest we were ever there, it’s the best way to stop people sooking and making things harder.
7. Last one!!! We aren’t the enemy and people don’t think we are, I’ve been doing this for a long time now and never been abused or had any threats in person while fishing, I’ve had people say they don’t agree with it and stand there asking questions to better understand why we do it, but the real wild ones you see on here are keyboard cowards. They only exist on the internet and never approach anyone in person, so take the time to chat to people and you will be amazed at the amount of support the sport has.
Anyway if you bothered to read all that, have a good season and get into see the boys at hot tackle to load up the reels, cheers for the help boys.
