Meet Dr Alyce Barnes, PE teacher, coach, mum, researcher, advocate and Lake Mac's Ambassador and Sports Leader of the Year for 2025. She's using her lived experience and world-leading research to champion girls, schools and communities across the region. 😊

In partnership with Lake Macquarie City Council we had the pleasure of chatting with Alyce about her work, research, living in Lake Mac and how we can all encourage an active lifestyle for ourselves and our kids. Newcastle’s creative landscape just got brighter with the opening of Alejandro’s, a gallery and workshop space founded by artist and art therapist Wayde Clark, aka 🎨

Alejandro’s is part gallery, part workshop hub and part community home, created as a place where people can tell stories, make art, learn, heal and feel genuinely welcomed. With rotating exhibitions, hands-on workshops and an open-door approach to creativity, it’s a vibrant, grounding and deeply human addition to the city’s arts scene. We spoke to Wayde to find out more ✨

Nominations are now open for the City of Newcastle 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards! 🏅 Newcastle is full of people quietly shaping our city for the better, giving their time, energy, and heart without expectation of recognition. These awards are an opportunity to celebrate these local legends and the people who make Newcastle feel like home.

Like this year's Citizen of the Year, Bailey Myers, who walked 4,500km across Australia to raise funds for Indigenous literacy, or 16-year-old Khuslen Batmandakh, who was named the 2025 Young Citizen of the Year after founding the Jesmond Book Nook, providing access to free books for local families. Or, the 2025 Community Group of the Year, The Unforgettables, a choir supporting and celebrating people living with dementia. ❤️

Find out more at the link below, and start thinking about the people you know in Newcastle whose care, creativity, or courage deserves to be celebrated.

About Swell Magazine

Swell Magazine is a quarterly printed publication that has been carefully curated and thoughtfully designed in order to showcase the best that Newcastle, and its surrounds has to offer. Locally produced, Swell Magazine aims to inspire people that live and work in the area by uncovering hidden gems and encouraging them to explore something new, while also enticing tourists to visit and providing them with all they need to know while in town.

In today’s digital age, many people still crave the tactile element that has been lost from online media. With this thought in mind, Swell has been designed to be collected, displayed on coffee tables and stored among your favourite books. Its pages will be enjoyed slowly and readers are encouraged to get lost in the words and images, time and time again.

The magazine’s main focus will be on showcasing Newcastle and Hunter-based businesses, encouraging readers to shop, dine and experience new things locally. It will uncover the stories and people behind some of Newcastle’s most-loved places, as well as the ever-expanding number of new businesses popping up around the city.
