More than 170 patients are occupying hospital beds across the Hunter while waiting for Commonwealth aged care or NDIS placements.

New figures show 174 patients were stranded across the Hunter New England Local Health District on 30 June.

That is up from 138 patients at the same time last year. It represents a 26 per cent increase.

A 23-year-old man has been charged after a vehicle allegedly rammed a police car in Merewether on Tuesday, 8 September.

Police allege the driver collided with the police vehicle before fleeing into nearby bushland.

He was arrested a short time later, with police allegedly finding a replica fi***rm, methylamphetamine and items believed to be stolen in the vehicle.

The man was charged with 14 offences and was refused bail on Wednesday, 9 September.

The Cruise Newcastle 2025-26 Passenger Survey revealed exceptional visitor satisfaction, with 80% of passengers indicating they would return to the city.

The survey results show that one of Newcastle’s greatest assets is its people, with the Welcome Volunteers and Visitor Information services receiving the highest rating.

Merewether Surfhouse is set for a major shake-up, with new owners confirming plans to transform the three-level beachfront venue into a new hospitality destination.

Hospitality operators Ben May and Rob Domjen will take over the Newcastle venue in October, with the site to continue operating through summer before closing for a major renovation in February 2027.

The revamped venue will reopen as Merewether Pavilion in mid-to-late 2027.

The fairytales many grew up with are getting a darker makeover when GRIMM arrives at Civic Theatre Newcastle this month.

Shake and Stir Theatre Co’s latest production brings characters including Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood together in a fast-paced journey through the original Brothers Grimm stories.

Adaptor, co-creator and actor Nelle Lee said the production was inspired by the nostalgia surrounding the familiar characters and original tales.
