Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. The club workshop for Lapidary is open Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Welcome to the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Incorporated

We are a small friendly community based, not-for-profit organisation, promoting and teaching the art of lapidary, silverwork and gem cutting. The Jewellery workshop is on Thursday afternoon from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. All lapidary equipment and faceting machines are available for use to club members and friendly instruction and assistance

are provided for new members. Cost is $6.00 per session for the Lapidary equipment. Newsletters are posted or e-mailed to members monthly with information on field trips, socials and gem shows. Field trips are an important part of the club's activities, we travel to many and varied gem fields. Destinations include Chinchilla, Casino and Stanthorpe or further afield to Tomahawk Creek for sapphires or Agate Creek in far North Queensland.

The winners of the Club’s annual Cabochon Competition which kicked off in September were:

💍 1st - Rel O’Keefe

Club members took part in blind voting at the Christmas party, for each of the 15 cabochons entered. Cabs had to be set into identical ring blanks provided by the club.

The last week of official Club workshops culminated in the annual 2025 Christmas Party. Huge thanks to Murray for hosting the event and our committee members for making it fun and memorable. Lots of laughs,great food and prizes with the cent raffles, the major raffle and the club’s Cabochon Competition.

Rob Ward took out the major raffle prize winning a lovely 1 carat Moisonette Diamond. Carol was very happy to take that rock home 💎💎💎

Apart from the fun and comraderie, not to mention Murray’s very cool collections of rocks used as decorations, as a fund raising event for the club it was a very successful day!

Last chance this week to visit the club to cut, cab, facet or silversmith before we close down for Christmas to give our hardworking workshop supervisors a break and our hardworking machinery and plumbing a much needed service, clean out and clean up!

General Clubhouse and workshop cleaning spree is on Thursday 4 Dec starting at 9am if you have time to come and help out.

Reminder 😀😀😀 Saturday workshop is on tomorrow 1-4pm. Members should let Kim know the day before if planning to attend. Cut big rocks, polish your agates, make beautiful cabs, clean up your sparkly shimmery boulder opal on the outdoor trolley! There is shade cloth now, but still advise BYO hat and sunscreen.

The Club’s annual Melbourne Cup lunch went down a treat with those attending. A huge spread of delicious food was shared, the Kevin Oliver Stakes were run and raffles and sweeps were invested in before cheering on the race.

Winner of the Kevin Oliver Stakes was Murray riding Bolt. Adriana came in 2nd on Honey, and in 3rd place was Brian on Winalot.

$1 and $2 Sweeps were won respectively by:
Murray and Lloyd
2nd place:
Helen and Brian
3rd place went to:
Rob and Helen

Winners of the raffle were:
1st - Murray

3rd - Lloyd

On Tuesday 4th November the club holds its annual Melbourne Cup Day event. Part fun/fundraiser.

Come along if you can get away from work or play even for an hour. It’s events like this that really help our small club to thrive and purchase the tools we need to continue to cut and polish superb rocks, facet beautiful gems and make funky silver jewellery 😃.

Our Story

The club workshop is open every Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon for general workshop, 12:00 noon to 3:30 pm for jewellery workshop and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. All lapidary equipment and faceting machines are available for use and friendly instruction and assistance are provided for new members. Cost is $6.00 per session. All members are welcome to attend our general meetings which are held bi-monthly at the clubhouse on the 3rd Tuesday of the month commencing at 7:00 pm. Newsletters are posted or e-mailed to members monthly with information on field trips, socials and gem shows.

Membership costs $55.00 for a family and $35.00 for an individual member per year. There are reduced rates for age pensioners and Juniors. Field trips are an important part of the club's activities and are usually held on the 3rd Sunday of each month. We travel to many and varied gem fields. Destinations include Chinchilla, Casino and Stanthorpe or further afield to Tomahawk Creek for sapphires or Agate Creek in far North Queensland.
