As we gear up for our next event after the winter break, we wrap this series with a spotlight on our Premier Class — where grassroots racing reaches its peak: Cup Class.
Member Spotlight: Richard Thompson — Our Cup Class Leader. A fierce competitor, technical mastermind, and our 2023 Club Champion - with which you earn the right to proudly display the number 1 on your car, which he did so on his yellow GT3 Clubsport throughout the 2024 season.
Richard’s Porsche journey began with a 1978 SC Targa, which he later transplanted with a 3.6L 993 engine. That car sparked a passion for performance, leading him to a black 1984 3.2 Carrera, which he rebuilt front to back for B Class racing. The Targa now lives with a close friend, and the 3.2 rests under a cover in semi-retirement — occasionally brought out for a nostalgic run.
Since joining Porsche Club Victoria in 2011, Richard has immersed himself in racing — a passion ignited during his time in Porsche workshops in the early 2000s, where SCs, 3.2s and 964s were prepped for competition. Known for his engineering skill as much as his racecraft, Richard sets up not only his own cars but often lends his expertise to others in the club.
“I’ve made some great friends through the club, but it’s the competition that keeps me coming back,” he says.
Cup Class isn’t just where the fastest club members race — it’s a genuine pathway. Over the years, it’s helped launch several PCV members into State Series and even Carrera Cup, a testament to the strength of our grassroots motorsport community.
And Richard’s dream Porsche?
“The GT1 — it shares DNA with the 996 GT3, and comes from one of Porsche’s greatest racing eras. Fried Egg headlights or not, I love that early 2000s GT era. Without those cars, there’d be no GT3 platform as we know it — thanks to Hans Mezger and Weissach.”
From street builds to club champion Richard is proof of what Porsche Club of Victoria is all about.
He’s earned that #1 before- now the question is can he do it again?
See you all on the grid. 🏁
