A follow up “Letter to the Editor” by Chris Rickman published in the West Australian

After my recent letter, 'Connectivity Crucial 03/04,' shedding light on the complete lack of phone and internet coverage during Northcliffe's 100th birthday weekend celebrations, I engaged with the Manjimup Shire. The Manjimup Shire explained that despite years of lobbying, governmental indifference persists, confirmed by Telstra, which allocates internet solely based on population density, exacerbating connectivity disparity, particularly in vital sectors like agriculture. The Shire also confirmed the problem is widespread, not isolated to Northcliffe alone.

Concerns from friends in Nannup during events like the Nannup Music Festival underscore the urgent need for regional infrastructure upgrades. The stark contrast between the substantial resources generated by towns like Manjimup and the pervasive lack of reliable internet access is alarming.

Unreliable telecommunications impede tourism, especially during events like the Manjimup Cherry Festival and The Karri Cup. How are the towns supposed to run these events properly when EFTPOS machines won’t even work? Urgent telecommunication upgrades are imperative, especially given the region's significant bushfire history.

Letter to the Editor of the West Australian published Wednesday the 3rd of April. By Chris Rickman

I attended Northcliffe's 100th birthday celebration over Easter, where the lack of internet and mobile reception, even on Telstra's network, was a glaring issue. This setback, attributed to inadequate infrastructure and the surge of thousands of visitors, deeply affected residents and tourists alike, disrupting daily life and access to essential services at the event. Improved internet infrastructure in Northcliffe is not just necessary; it's imperative for the town's pivotal roles in agriculture, tourism, renewable energy, and biodiversity conservation. Dependable connectivity is a lifeline for dairy farmers striving to manage operations efficiently and maintain competitiveness. Investing in Northcliffe's internet infrastructure isn't just about modernization; it's about safeguarding its prosperity. It's unjust that a town contributing significantly to Australia's economy should face such hurdles, especially on its milestone celebration in the year 2024. The government should prioritize upgrading Northcliffe's Telstra internet tower to ensure reliable connectivity and support the town's growth
