Bow River Publishing was formed in 2007 and deals with self-publishing Australian history and culture as well as railway history. Bow River is situated in northern Western Australia, and is immortalised by the Cold Chisel song as well as the property at Ogunbil NSW. In June 2007, Bow River published FALL OF THE BAR, a history of many humble working-class pubs in New South Wales. Many of these old watering holes are under threat from redevelopment or have been displaced by a changing society.

After this morning’s launch of Dion’s double decker bus 6057 at the Sydney Bus Museum, we finally got the opportunity to present Howard Collins with complimentary copies of our single deck suburban electric books on behalf of Bow River Publishing. So he now has Leeds Forge Cars, Walsh Island Vols. 1 & 2 and End of an Era in his library.

This was our gesture of thanks for his advocacy in getting the preserved single deck set F1 running on the mainline. If it wasn’t for his push against the bureaucracy, sets F1 & W3 would still be sitting idle in the sheds today.

For those not yet aware, the newly restored White Bay power station is open to the public for the duration of Biennale arts festival until early June. Sydney Bus Museum is running free (gold coin donation) shuttles from QVB Stand B (York Street) on both weekend days as route 443. The art on display within might not be to everyone’s taste, but the huge spaces of the restored power station are definitely worth a look or two. Admission to the power station is free.

Here’s To’ee - C7418 and T4354 lead a single deck suburban train out of Sydney Central Station, toasted by the animated neon light of Toohey’s rather smelly brewery. Late 1978.

Who doesn’t remember the famous Claude Neon golfer above Sharpie’s Golf House between Central and the underground?
The neon is now with the Powerhouse Museum, where it needs a major restoration, while the building itself is long gone for a low-rise apartment block. These photos were taken in 2007 when demolition seemed imminent.

In a heritage oasis amongst a sea of high-rise, Strathfield Signal Box, a by-product of the 1920s electrification scheme, has been fully restored and looks a million dollars! Time will tell on its future use, if any. The signal box is just to the west of platform 8.

We’re pleased to see the Alexandria Hotel on Henderson Road (just up from the ARHS Bookshop) has reopened after a long shutdown. They’re making the most of the outdoor back courtyard in the summer months and have setup a temporary outdoor bar & bistro.

It’s interesting to note the front bar is booked out of use, but retained as a relic from the past. Definitely worth a visit! 🍻
