Lovely words on the publishing process from John Mathews, author of 'My Intellectual Odyssey: A Life Not Pre-Ordained'.
'I offered the manuscript to several leading non-fiction publishers – including Australian university presses – but none of them accepted it, usually sight unseen. “Difficult to sell” was the universal judgment. I then thought about self-publishing, and creating a website to display and market the book. This could have worked had I been a bit more technically accomplished – but there is always the cachet of having an actual publisher which is not be denied. So I kept looking and eventually found Hybrid Press in Melbourne – a small husband and wife team in the closing chapter of their publishing careers – just like me really. They were easy to deal with, responsible and communicative as to the process they were following. I have dealt with numerous top level presses like Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press and Stanford University Press in the US. You get the benefit and editorial excellence of their brand – but you have to deal with a publishing giant that runs by and enforces its own rules. I have done enough of that and was pleased to be able to deal with a tiny press for this memoir.'

Just out! 'My Intellectual Odyssey' by John Mathews. In this memoir, Mathews outlines the twists and turns of a career that spans six decades, culminating in his earning a Professorship at Macquarie University in Sydney. He discusses his career as an intellectual Odyssey, full of challenges and controversies and unexpected developments. He outlines how he built on his PhD in London to act as advisor to unions in expanding the scope of their negotiations to encompass health and safety concerns; and how this led to interventions in debates over industrial and economic democracy.
