We begin to delve into architectural plans and drawings to reveal all the materials down to every nail that has gone in to build her. The story of the Victoria Hotel Ouyen is about to be put together again, from start to finish. Our research has only just begun as we endeavour to reveal and relive her history.

We found some advertisements of businesses that once thrived in Ouyen from 1912 to the 1930s. We have collected and collated advertisements from the time of the hotel's conception and opening. A testament of the thriving town Ouyen was back in the day. If you have any memories of these businesses please share. Whilst the Victoria Hotel still stands, these businesses are long gone. However, their impact and their legacy will always be inextricably intertwined with the heritage and history of Ouyen. It has been fascinating to learn about how life was in Ouyen back in those times. We can understand how some of the features of this grand building can be linked to the past. A link between time and space, made possible through research and imagination.

If history is to repeat itself, we can see that Ouyen is once again slowly evolving and will boom again. Just as the strong Mallee stump that sits pride and place in town. The resilience of its people will ensure that Ouyen will never lose its connection and competitive advantage with the major cities that surround it. This is a small town that has always been committed to making big noise when it comes to ensuring the issues that matter to it are heard. I guess this is why I feel it's important to preserve the history of the Victoria Hotel Ouyen. It too symbolises the progress and resilience of the township. You can never erase its history from Ouyen, it must never be left to crumble.

Please, if you ever travel this way. Make sure you stop and take a walk around town. Take a moment to imagine where these old businesses may have once stood. Remember to pay a visit to the Victoria Hotel, let your imagination roam free. History is never lost, it can only be forgotten.

It's your stories and memories that keeps the past alive. Don't let this story end.

Some drone photos taken by the amazing crew at Oxley Roofing & Plumbing who were engaged to assess our roof. Despite the rust, the 106 year old roof has held well. But if we want the building to remain standing for another 106 years, it's necessary to replace. I am hoping to keep some of the tin sheets to be used as an art project as a feature and testament to its history. We don't want to ever erase its past, but rather add to the story so far.

I have gathered as much information as I can, filling notebooks and collated albums of photos taken over two years. As I begin to pull these out, it seems like a story unfolding, beginning over 100 years ago. Except, I'm not reading a story. I'm trying to preserve 106 years of history. Where and how do I begin? It seems overwhelming the more I think about it, but it's a passion that has been embedded deep within my heart the very first day I fell in love with this building. It has now become a commitment. Most see her as a nightmare too difficult to deal with, to me she is my dream come true.

We only live once, and each one of us will commit ourselves in different ways. This project is my commitment and I can't convince myself otherwise. If you do travel from Melbourne to Ouyen along the Calder Highway. As you approach Ouyen, take a glimpse to the left just over the railway line. You will see the Victoria Hotel Ouyen. Please take your time to appreciate her, as she is a huge part of the history and heritage of Ouyen. A peaceful town where I once lived, and had my coffee every morning on the balcony of my hotel gazing at the magical Mallee sky.

Thank you for following me on this journey and your support. We all have a passion, a purpose, a story. Please keep sharing yours with me.

This was the first photo of the day the Victoria Hotel Ouyen captured my heart. Taken in the breakfast room against the backdrop of the most beautiful vintage gold wallpaper I ever did see. When you're an owner of such a majestic old building, you cannot help but feel a sense of responsibility to preserve her history and heritage. She bares the scars from the passing of time and neglect and this is what makes me love her even more. I lived in Room 7 for 2 years, although she is a young 106 years old. In those short years I lived and worked behind her walls, I know every crack, scar and defect she bares inside and out.

It would have been easier to sell and hand her over to just anyone, but given the commitment we've put into her thus far, this is something we will never consider lightly. Unless, we find someone who loves her as much as I do or perhaps even more. We have entrusted this building to the new tenants who continue to keep the business open for the community of Ouyen. This has been endearing to see the locals embrace her and had missed her when she was closed. But this is only the second chapter of the vision for this magnificent building of ours. To protect her and ensure that she stands right where she was first conceived for many generations to come, we will fight for her heritage protection. Please support country pubs and help anyway you can to preserve these old buildings.

A huge thank you to everyone who has sent me messages. This page is progressive and I'm still developing our website. We have so much work to do, and I'm overwhelmed by all the messages of support and advice from trades and experts alike.Thank you for always remembering our beautiful building and updating us on your visits. We are grateful to have you with us on this journey. I sincerely thank each and everyone of you for always reminding me to never give up on my dream.

We are looking forward to having our say. Where there is a will, there surely has to be a way!

Following extensive discussions with various stakeholders regarding the current state of Victoria, and encouraged by supportive individuals, Let's get rural is now positioned to advocate on behalf of a broad constituency. This initiative provides an avenue for all Victorians concerned about the future of the state to voice their perspectives.

All collected concerns will be compiled and subsequently presented to the Premier and Members of Parliament.

Will this process yield tangible results?

While skepticism and criticism may arise, the potential for positive impact remains.

"Let's Get Rural" operates on an apolitical basis and has a proven track record of advocating for Australians with shared viewpoints on pertinent issues.

Although definitive outcomes cannot be guaranteed, one will never know if one doesn't try.

We encourage you to share your insights at www.letsgetrural.org/haveyoursay.

Thank you to those of you who sent through these images to us when we started cleaning up the building back in 2023. We still continue to do research to this day to gather as much history as possible on Victoria Hotel Ouyen. We hope to one day collate all of this information and start to build up a story of her history. Some day the walls along the hallways will be filled with images both old and new capturing the journeys she has lived through. It is envisaged that this building will outlive us all. And that we will remain as a memory, and will always be entertwined with her history. It's important that we preserve this building, she is symbolic to the history of the Mallee as well as Ouyen. We certainly know this building like the back of our hand. We've crawled through cavities, seen her cracks, leaks, and know where she will buckle. At times we are left guessing when. Regardless of her flaws, she remains the most beautiful building we have had the pleasure to own and renovate. We hope that she continues to be the social hub for Ouyen and will attract visitors near and far. Old photos such as these, always inspires us to imagine how we can make her shine again. We love old buildings, Victoria Hotel Ouyen is just only one of them around the country. It's just sad that some are just abandoned. We will never let that happen here.

👻 👻 A GHOSTLY TALE 👻 👻

A question we are often asked is whether the Vic Hotel is haunted. Although we don't believe in ghosts, we dare say that at times we can feel a certain presence around, as if someone was uncertain of our intentions here. A while ago I posted this photo and it sparked a lot of discussion about ghosts. While you ponder at the photo, please let me share my own experiences with you. There have been three instances that has left me a little spooked.

🤡 Early in 2024 I had a back packer help me clear out all the rooms in the West Wing. I noticed all the rooms had bibles inside the bed side tables. I made sure to gather them all and stored them in a safe place. I'd often hum to myself if I was walking into a room or working in them on my own. I do so to calm myself, as I always felt someone was watching me or following me as I worked. It was about 2-3 days after I had cleared out RM 49 & 50 which was a double room accessible through the door of RM 49 that was tucked around a little dark corner off the main hallway. I had closed up for the night, and was walking towards RM 31 which was mum's temporary room. I noticed that the light was on in RM 49 & 50, which was slightly opposite to her room. I always kept the doors locked and very certain I turned off the light to that room. The fact it was on and the door was locked defied explanation that sent shivers down my spine. Well, we didn't dare go in to turn the light of that night and left it for at least two days before we worked up the courage to go in and switch off the light. Since that day, before I changed or touched anything I would always make sure to say out loud, that I was trying to clean it up and make it better. Hoping who ever was there understood my purpose here. Nonetheless, we both blamed the other for forgetting to switch off the light. Despite my mum only having the key and insisted she had not opened the room to go and do anything inside. We both had no explanation for it.

🤡 In this instance, two tourists had stopped by for lunch. I ran into them as they were exploring upstairs in the hallway of the West Wing. It was a warm day, and there was no wind. As usual, all the doors were closed and locked and there were no guests staying at the time. So no windows would have been opened in the bedrooms. I met up with them at the end of the hallway and we slowly walked together as I answered their questions about the hotel. We stopped briefly at the door of the Men's bathroom which was almost opposite to RM 38. I was still talking when suddenly we noticed the door rattle about three times and then stopped. The three of us looked at each other clearly surprised and spooked. Initially I dismissed it as perhaps a breeze, and continued to talk. Then it happened again. This time we walked away quickly, as we all knew there was clearly no breeze. I would later discover too that I had accidentally locked the key in the room whilst making up the bed a while back. So nobody could have access to the room. When I finally was able to find someone to help open the door to retrieve the key, I checked the window and it was closed. It still intrigues me to this day.

🤡 In this last instance, I was woken up at around 2am-3am to the sound of creaking floorboards outside my room at RM 8 on the North Wing. It sounded like someone was using the sink to wash their hands in the bathroom just slightly opposite to my room. I remembered thinking that it was odd. And assumed that mum for some reason had come to use this bathroom instead of the one that was actually working and closest to her in the West Wing. I remembered feeling scared as I glanced at the dim light of the hallway that passed beneath my bedroom door. Hoping to see a shadow if there was someone walking by. There was no shadow. A few days would pass before I got the opportunity to ask mum whether it was her that came to use the bathroom early that particular morning. She replied it wasn't her, as she knew that bathroom was not working.

These would be the experiences I've had, and it all happened in the space of time when I was emptying rooms, painting and decorating them. Moving furniture and storing them in different rooms. I clearly felt that someone didn't like things to be changed. Though I must say that I haven't experienced anything since, there is now a sense of warmth that the changes have been embraced and whoever is there has either left or is at peace with all that is happening. I have included the photos of RM 38 and RMS 49 & 50 that I mentioned above, as they look now after renovating.

Does anyone else have any similar experiences at the Vic Hotel or any other old hotels? Please share them with us.
